The iPhone Completely Shuts Off

The iPhone Completely Shuts Off Image

By Alexia Petrakos

With the arrival of Apple's iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store, the iPhone is more resembling a mini computer than a phone-and with that increased functionality also comes some of same problems that haunt real desktop and laptop computers. This how-to addresses one of the worst of these problems: crashes. There are a few different kinds of crashes that can happen on an iPhone-and we will address each one in turn.

Step 1

CRASH TYPE ONE

You attempt to open an app and as the application is trying to open it immediately closes and returns to the home screen. This behavior might baffle some users of "that other operating system" because when an application crashes it takes the whole computer with it. But Mac, Linux and Unix users know exactly what just happened; the application crashed but the operating system did not. (What a novel concept.)

Step 2

CRASH TYPE ONE SOLUTION

Fortunately for iPhone users the solution to this is the easiest and actually takes a page from "that other operating system's" playbook. Just restart the phone. To do that hold down the Sleep/Awake button (the one at the very top next to the SIM card slot) until a red arrow appears and says, "Slide To Power Off." Slide the red arrow with your finger and the iPhone completely shuts off.

To turn it back on just hold down the Sleep/Awake button again until the Apple logo appears. Once the iPhone has completely restarted you should now be able to run the previously crashing App without any trouble.

Step 3

CRASH TYPE TWO

The opposite of the previous incident we spoke about would be when an iPhone application freezes while still open. Touching the iPhone does nothing and pressing the Home button (the one at the bottom for your thumb) does nothing. In this case, essentially the application itself has crashed. If this happened when we were on a real Mac in OSX, we would just do a "Force Quit" right? The "Force Quit" would kill the application but leave the Operating System unscathed. Well, fortunately, the iPhone is a real Mac and the iPhone Operating System is really OSX, so we can do a Force Quit here too.

Step 4

CRASH TYPE TWO SOLUTION

Hold down the Home button for about six seconds until it returns you to the Home Screen. By doing this you "Force Quit" the application that locked up. If you're still having trouble with your apps after that, restart the phone as described in the solution for Crash Type One (Step 2).

Step 5

CRASH TYPE THREE

Here's what to do when the mother of all crashes occurs to your iPhone. The Sleep/Awake button does nothing; the Home button does nothing and the Holy Water you sprinkled on it to exorcise the demons from it didn't help either.

Step 6

CRASH TYPE THREE SOLUTION

The secret to recovering from this kind of crash is to hold down both the Sleep/Awake and Home buttons at the same time. This is the equivalent of holding down the Power button on a PC or even just pulling the power cord of a PC clean out of the wall. The iPhone will go straight into a restart and you will see the Apple logo come up. No red arrows this time. Congratulations, you have just exorcised the demons from your iPhone!

Google Launch Siri Rival Soon

Google Launch Siri Rival Soon Image
One of the new feature keys in IPHONE 4S in Apple's artificial INTELLIGENCE AGENT IS SIRI. Generating a lot of publicity and adding voice recognition technologies back into the forefront. More voice enabled applications are expected in the coming year from many companies.

The company seems to be stepping up in their efforts the in the coming months, even though Google's android have long had voice dictation and command capabilities. AndroidandMe has reported a secret project codenamed "MAJEL" which will be the evolution of "GOOGLE'S VOICE ACTIONS", adding to it natural language processing.

Siri is given an edge with the natural language processing over the simple voice recognition system.

In Slashgear interview with matias Duarte, whom is GOOGLE'S DIRECTOR of ANDROID OS User Experience, describing their approach which won't try to copy the "Siri's" attitude:

THE METAPHOR I LIKE TO TAKE IS - IF IT'S STAR WARS, YOU HAVE THESE ROBOT PERSONALITIES LIKE C-3PO who runs around and he tries to do stuff for you, messes up and makes jokes, he's kind of a comic relief guy. Our approach is more like Star Trek, right, starship Enterprise; every piece of computing surface, everything is voice-aware. It's not that there's a personality, it doesn't have a name, it's just "Computer." And you can talk to it and you can touch it, you can interact with it at the same time as you talk with it. It's just another way to interface with the computer.The codename "Majel" came from MAJEL BARRETT-RODDENBERRY whom is the voiced Federation Computer from STAR TREK.

Apple Inc Almost 1 5 Million Items Bought On Ebay Vimobile This Holiday

Apple Inc Almost 1 5 Million Items Bought On Ebay Vimobile This Holiday Image
Holiday shopping went mobile this season, with a surge in buyers using the eBay iPhone application and other eBay mobile properties to find great deals while on the go. The number of items bought via eBay mobile applications this year was triple last year's holiday volume. In 2009, eBay buyers and sellers have generated more than half a billion dollars of transactions via mobile - with strong momentum this holiday season.

According to VP of platform business solutions and mobile at eBay, "consumers had the power to seek out the best deals regardless of time or location, to the point that you could even do comparison shopping on your mobile device while you're in the store at the mall. The lines between online and offline were permanently blurred in 2009."

MOBILE COMMERCE UP

Nearly 6 million people have eBay on their iPhone and shoppers are making 750,000 unique visits a day to eBay via mobile applications. Mobile purchases this season range from designer handbags to a 75,000 1966 Chevrolet Corvette. According to an IDC report, mobile Internet users will double in number by 2013 to surpass one billion. Here are some mobile eBay trends:

- Nearly six million people are carrying eBay around in their pocket,

- Users from more than 165 countries visited the eBay mobile Web site and iPhone application,

- 1.5 million items were bought on eBay using mobile phones worldwide this holiday,"

"- In 2009, an item sold every 2 seconds via eBay mobile applications worldwide."

Mac Os X Snow Leopard

Mac Os X Snow Leopard Image
Again, it's keynote time: The sold out Worldwide Developer Conference 2010 - WWDC10 - is about to begin. At 10:00 PST Steve Jobs will be on stage. Developers, fans and all others who are interested in Apple's business development will be hypnotized of Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Millions of people are sitting at their computers, iPhones, iPads or other mobile devices and want to know instantly what Steve is presenting today.

It's really fascinating how Steve plays with the masses so it does not surprise too much, that the big German news magazine Spiegel Online refers to the event as an "Californian worship". That's not how I would describe it but it shows how hard it is to understand and describe that keynote phenomenon. Just thnik about the "viewing rates" or reach of a presentation of Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo (Nokia CEO), Jim Balsillie (Research In Motion co CEO) or even Eric Schmidt (Google CEO).

What will present us today nobody really knows. But there is a lot of rumor out there: The iPhone HD or 4G? A sneak preview of the next Mac OS X version? New Mac hardware? the first photos from the Moscone West Center suggest that it's all about apps maybe a Mac AppStore

Some weeks ago, a developer wrote a provocative email to Steve, whether he will counter Apples competitors like Google/Android. Steve's short reply was "You won't be disappointed!".

So the expectations are high and for all of us, who are not able to attend the Steve Jobs show at the Moscone West Center in San Francisco live: Here are some of the most important live coverage blogs for the WWDC keynote 2010:

* Jason Snell Dan Moren, MACWORLD.COM

* Jason Chen for GIZMODO won't get access to the keynote - because of the iPhone 4G case

* Erica Ogg for CNET NEWS

* Joshua Topolsky for ENGADGET

* John Paczkowski for ALL THINGS DIGITAL

* Technologizer-Staff for TECHNOLOGIZER

* Ars-Staff for ARS TECHNICA

* Greg Kumparak for TECHCRUNCH / CRUNCHGEAR

As soon as the video of the keynote is available as a Quicktime stream you'll get an update
