Sony Has Hired Apple Cofounder Steve Wozniak

Sony has hired Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak to advise on its upcoming film based on the book Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacsson. Woz will be there to consult on Jobs and on technical aspects of computers. Sony has already hired Aaron Sorkin to write the film and he was also responsible for the recent film based on Facebook, "The Social Network" as well as television's "The West Wing".

Unfortunately this project does not seem that straight forward for Sorkin.
"I know so little about what I am going to write. I know what I am not going to write. It can't be a straight ahead biography because it's very difficult to shake the cradle-to-grave structure of a biography, " Sorkin told reporters at a news conference for his upcoming HBO drama "The Newsroom." Sorkin noted that "The Social Network" saw the Facebook story through the lens of an acrimonious lawsuit that pitted CEO Mark Zuckerberg against his Harvard friends over the creation of the social media network. "Drama is tension versus obstacle. Someone wants something, something is standing in their way of getting it. They want the money, they want the girl, they want to get to Philadelphia - doesn't matter... And I need to find that event and I will. I just don't know what it is," Sorkin said.

Sorkin is set to focus his full attention on the Steve Jobs film later this month; once the finishing touches are applied to the launch of his new HBO show, "The Newsroom". Sony still doesn't have anyone cast for the leading roles in the film so we would expect to start to hear much more very soon.

Facebook App Center Curates Apps For iPhone And Android Users Yesterday

Yesterday, Facebook announced the launch of its new curated App Center that'll let Facebook users find iOS or Android apps quickly and easily. The App Center will give users personalized recommendations and let them see apps their friends use. You can see a brief screencast of the App Center here.

Given that app discovery is one of the biggest sticking points for new iOS device owners, and that Facebook owns a huge share of Internet users' online time and attention, this new marquee for apps might turn out to be another major promotional venue for app developers.

Facebook users with an iOS or Android device can browse a catalog of mobile apps compatible with their phone or tablet, once the App Center rolls out into Facebook's mobile version.

The desktop version of the App Center also has a new "Send to Mobile" feature that'll install apps on a user's mobile device (via the appropriate App Store or Google Play link). Apps featured at launch will include Draw Something, Pinterest, Nike+ GPS, and games such as Jetpack Joyride, Ghosts of Mistwood, and Ghost Recon Commander.

The App Center is rolling out in the US now and will launch with more than 600 social apps.

Firm Comscore Has Reported That Smartphone Gaming Is Continuing The Surge

I bet most of you out there have Angry Birds on your smartphones. That game is one of the most popular out there for the iPhone and for other smartphones. The latest version of the game is Angry Birds Space. A new update has been tipped on that app as coming soon that the fans the animated TV shows would get a kick out of.

Apparently, a Simpsons expansion pack is coming in the future. At least that's what we expect considering the pink doughnut in the picture Homer favors. Research firm comScore has reported that smartphone gaming is continuing the surge.

In February smartphone gaming increased 55% in Europe. 42% of all smartphone owners in five key markets in Europe have played at least one game on their phone. According to the analytics firm 16.4% of smartphone users in the UK surveyed during the three months ending in February of 2012 said they had played at least one game other smartphone daily with over half playing at least once a month.

Apple Is Expected To Announce Their Next-generation Smartphone

Apple promised a lot of new features for all iOS devices thanks to iOS 6, however, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 owners are being left out in the cold when it comes to the new Apple-developed Maps software. Pocket-Lint noticed some fine print foolery at the bottom of Apple's Maps page. It reads: "Flyover and turn-by-turn navigation will be available only on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 or later."

There is more bad news for iPhone 3GS owners. The device will not be receiving VIP List, Flagged Smart mailboxes, FaceTime and Offline reading. It's safe to assume that the iPhone 3GS will be discontinued in the fall when Apple is expected to announce their next-generation smartphone. However, iPhone 4 owners may be feeling a little burned by iOS 6 after its release.

The Next iPhone Is Assumed To Debut In The Fall Of This Year

A series of pictures have surfaced that claim to show parts of the next iPhone in both black and white colors (iPhone 5, iPhone 6, call it what you want). The most notable images are of the rear shell of the alleged next-gen iPhone, where the Apple logo and "iPhone" tag are printed, and show what looks like an all new aluminum unibody construction. The device also appears to have sufficient room to accommodate the larger 4 display that has been heavily rumored.

The images were obtained and published by 9to5mac apparently from supply chain sources, though the machine cut lines shown inside the shell could indicate these are prototype pieces and may not precisely resemble the final shipping device.

Other notable features shown in the photos are a smaller power adapter port at the bottom of the device, redesigned speaker grills, and the headphone jack appears to have been moved to the bottom of the device.

The redesigned enclosure and 4 screen fit nicely within our recent list of likely rumors about iPhone 5, other expected features include 4G LTE support, a faster processor with more RAM, iOS 6, and a better camera.

The next iPhone is assumed to debut in the fall of this year, sometime in the September or October timeframe.

Want an Apple iPhone but don't want to switch carriers? Now you can unlock your Iphone to use on any carrier.

Step 1

Start up Itunes and update your phone to the latest update (2.2). Download Quickpwn from http://www.quickpwn.com/. This application is what you will use to "Jailbreak" your Iphone.

Step 2

Connect your Iphone to your PC and run Quickpwn. Select your phone. Select your phone's firmware. Install Cydia or Installer. I prefer to install installer. Follow the step by step instructions.

SmartSync, which has been doing good business on the iPhone app store [itunes link], has released an updated version that is a big improvement on the original app, which has become popular because it makes you sound like some sort of omnipresent god. No, I got that wrong. Let's try that again. It's like having a CRM for your friends. When someone calls you, SmartSync displays their latest Facebook statuses or photos against the call. Say they said they were tired. When they call you you say "Wow, sorry to hear you're feeling tired!" even before they've said hello. See, suddenly you're all-knowing.

The app syncs birthday reminders, status updates, profile pictures and check-ins. SmartSync also sync with contacts, even if you aren't friends on Facebook. If both people calling each other have SmartSync installed, you get their Facebook profile photo and whatever else they've recently published.

The startup is now looking to incorporate more social networks such as LinkedIn and other notifications when contacts change. As a result it's getting high rankings in the iPhone app store as a paid-for app.

Bringing social syncing to your contact books makes sense - suddenly your old contact address books looks a bit flat without this facility. Just don't say the word Plaxo

The Facebook iOS app's built-in contact syncing feature isn't that great and often can't distinguish between a name on Facebook and the contact you have in your phone. SmartSync claims it is much better at this, matching contacts using factors beyond just a person's name and achieving a higher hit rate in syncing.

Founders Ken Vinner and Shlomo Unger have angel backing for the app. Here are the guys demoing it for me at Mobile World Congress.

Multitask with the 3G iPhone. Check e-mail, Internet maps and talk on the phone - all at the same time. You can even watch videos while talking to someone over the phone. You won't even need to access WiFi to take advantage of the 3G iPhone's multitasking features.

Make calls and use the Web with your 3G iPhone

Step 1

Make a call on the Web. Tap the phone icon, a green box with a white phone icon in the center. Check the range via the status icon to determine if you can make a call from your present location. The signal's range is indicated by the multiple bars depicted on the icon. If you have many bars, then you are able to make calls easily. If you have few bars, then expect some delay, lack of connection or possibly no ability to execute a call. Select your numeric keypad. This icon resembles nine tiny square buttons on a phone. Tap in the number you wish to call, then tap Call. Visit the Favorites icon to look up frequently used numbers. Visit the Contacts icon to add new people and phone numbers to your iPhone. Tap on Recent Calls to return a missed call.

Step 2

Tap your Settings button, then tap on General, Network and Enable 3G. This turns on 3G for access to the cellular network when there is no Internet connection available. When you want to make a call while surfing the Internet, this feature can be very handy, especially if you are trying to get directions.

Step 3

Enable your e-mail and Web browsing. Go to Settings. Tap on General. Tap on Network. Select Data Roaming On.

Step 4

Turn off iPhone radio transmitters. Select Airplane mode. You may still use WiFi on a plane if the law in a particular region allows it.

Step 5

Charge your iPhone by plugging the USB cable into the iPhone port and the other end in the 2.0 USB port on your computer. Make sure your computer is on, or risk draining your iPhone's battery.

Step 6

Send a text message. Tap on the Plus sign and select from your contacts list and type your message. Click Send. To send to someone not already in your contacts, tap on the pen sign, then type the number and your message. Click Send.

Crosswa Lk The App Discovery Service Better Than iTunes Genius Is Now An App

Mobile application discovery service Crosswa.lk has just debuted its much anticipated native counterpart, in the form of a new iPhone application. The app soft-launched over the weekend, allowing users to see what apps their friends are using as well as those that are popular on the wider Crosswa.lk network. It also allows users to quickly rate apps and receive recommendations of apps they might like to try.

As a self-described app addict, I've enjoyed using Crosswa.lk's online service since its November launch. The user interface for the website is well-designed, easy to use, and feels more like a social network than an app search engine or app ratings and review site.

On Crosswa.lk, users can find and follow their friends, including those from Gmail and Facebook, and peruse the site's popular and recommended users in order to fill out their network of personal app recommenders. To use the service, you sync your iPhone with Crosswa.lk, which allows it to build an online profile of your app collection. There's even an iPhone emulator which shows how your apps would look, if installed on a phone. (Unfortunately, it doesn't duplicate your personal organizational structure and folders.)

And, of course, there are the app ratings and recommendations - the key piece to the Crosswa.lk experience. You can "like" apps, give them stars, write reviews, share the app to Facebook or Twitter, and see how many of your friends have the app installed, too. It's really the social recommendation component that's most important here - when you discover a lot of your friends are using an app, you're likely to try it, too.

Explains Crosswa.lk co-founder Thomas McLeod, the concept for the Crosswa.lk service came to the team after they faced their own app discovery challenges as developers. (The team's other apps include Pagelime, Spypic, Spyvid, ControlShift, Cooties and Frametastic).

"As we got deeper and deeper into app development, we kept hearing from other developers that they had no idea how people found their apps, and honestly we were facing the same problem ourselves," McLeod says. "We sat down and kicked around a bunch of ideas, and came to the conclusion that the number one way we were guaranteed to download an app was if a friend recommended it."

And so, Crosswa.lk was born.

But as much fun as it is to use the online service, Crosswa.lk desperately needed its own mobile app. After all, if you're building a service to help improve app discoverywell, you kind of need an app for that.

The new mobile version of Crosswa.lk brings real-time feeds of apps trending among your friends plus all those using Crosswa.lk. You can then filter this list by a large set of criteria, such as price, category, community (e.g. photographers, gamers, bloggers, etc.), ratings, most "liked," and more. You can also use the app to access the various Crosswa.lk communities, or see which apps are on sale and what searches are popular now, find friends, rate apps, and, of course, get your own Genius-like recommendations.

Actually, scratch that last bit - Crosswa.lk's recommendations are far, far better than iTunes' Genius.

Oh, and one more thing - just in time for SXSW, Crosswa.lk's app features a section called "Who's Winning Austin" which will keep track of the trending apps at SXSW in real time. You'll find this at the bottom of the Trending Apps section.

Crosswa.lk comes from the team at Imaginary Feet, whose other two co-founders are Emil Anticevic and Patrick Jackson. The company has a small amount of seed funding from a new firm called XOL Ventures, which happens to be four ex-AOL guys. (Disclosure(?): TechCrunch is owned by AOL).

Atandt Offered Cheap Data Plans For iPad 3g Customers

When it comes to the Verizon iPhone, there is no shortage of rumors. The latest rumor suggests that Apple and AT&T had a deal with the iPad 3G. AT&T offered cheap data plans for iPad 3G customers, in exchange for Apple renewing their contract for at least another year. This is just pure speculation from a Wall Street Analyst, Brian Marshall (source: Computer World) so for all we know he could be making things up. There is still a possibility of the iPhone launching on the Verizon Wireless network, we'll just need to play the waiting game and see.

In other news, the new iPhone 4G or iPhone HD is launching this summer with the iPhone 4.0 software. The iPhone 4G hardware prototype was leaked, and a photo gallery of it was posted online late last month. Apple will most likely announce the iPhone 4G during the WWDC event that takes place during June 7-11.

The iPhone Completely Shuts Off

With the arrival of Apple's iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store, the iPhone is more resembling a mini computer than a phone-and with that increased functionality also comes some of same problems that haunt real desktop and laptop computers. This how-to addresses one of the worst of these problems: crashes. There are a few different kinds of crashes that can happen on an iPhone-and we will address each one in turn.

Step 1

CRASH TYPE ONE

You attempt to open an app and as the application is trying to open it immediately closes and returns to the home screen. This behavior might baffle some users of "that other operating system" because when an application crashes it takes the whole computer with it. But Mac, Linux and Unix users know exactly what just happened; the application crashed but the operating system did not. (What a novel concept.)

Step 2

CRASH TYPE ONE SOLUTION

Fortunately for iPhone users the solution to this is the easiest and actually takes a page from "that other operating system's" playbook. Just restart the phone. To do that hold down the Sleep/Awake button (the one at the very top next to the SIM card slot) until a red arrow appears and says, "Slide To Power Off." Slide the red arrow with your finger and the iPhone completely shuts off.

To turn it back on just hold down the Sleep/Awake button again until the Apple logo appears. Once the iPhone has completely restarted you should now be able to run the previously crashing App without any trouble.

Step 3

CRASH TYPE TWO

The opposite of the previous incident we spoke about would be when an iPhone application freezes while still open. Touching the iPhone does nothing and pressing the Home button (the one at the bottom for your thumb) does nothing. In this case, essentially the application itself has crashed. If this happened when we were on a real Mac in OSX, we would just do a "Force Quit" right? The "Force Quit" would kill the application but leave the Operating System unscathed. Well, fortunately, the iPhone is a real Mac and the iPhone Operating System is really OSX, so we can do a Force Quit here too.

Step 4

CRASH TYPE TWO SOLUTION

Hold down the Home button for about six seconds until it returns you to the Home Screen. By doing this you "Force Quit" the application that locked up. If you're still having trouble with your apps after that, restart the phone as described in the solution for Crash Type One (Step 2).

Step 5

CRASH TYPE THREE

Here's what to do when the mother of all crashes occurs to your iPhone. The Sleep/Awake button does nothing; the Home button does nothing and the Holy Water you sprinkled on it to exorcise the demons from it didn't help either.

Step 6

CRASH TYPE THREE SOLUTION

The secret to recovering from this kind of crash is to hold down both the Sleep/Awake and Home buttons at the same time. This is the equivalent of holding down the Power button on a PC or even just pulling the power cord of a PC clean out of the wall. The iPhone will go straight into a restart and you will see the Apple logo come up. No red arrows this time. Congratulations, you have just exorcised the demons from your iPhone!

Google Launch Siri Rival Soon
