The Atandt iPhone 4s

The Atandt iPhone 4s Image
iOS 5.1 snuck in a 4G indicator on the AT&T iPhone 4S. When asked if they felt like their phone was running at mind-bending speed, one commenter smartly replied "Lightning fast. I can't wait to get throttled even sooner now." This encapsulates the conundrum of 4G data, and a problem currently faced by new LTE iPad owners: increased data speeds are only as useful as the data caps that go along with them. Drinking from the firehose is only fun if it's hooked up to more than a thimble of water.

The Wall Street Journal recently ran a piece detailing various anecdotes where users were quickly running out of data, and needed to pay extra to get their service back on track. Though it's good that the pitfall is being identified for those who might not know any better, for most of us it's obvious that higher speeds without appropriately bumped data caps will ultimately result in a bigger bill. If you buy a Ferrari, after all, you're going to need the gas to go with it.

This is the world Android owners have been living in for awhile now. The problem is only exacerbated on the iOS side as video is going to HD, even 1080p to take advantage of the new high resolution display. There are a few things you can do to alleviate the stress on your bucket of data, like relying on Wi-Fi as much as possible, and reducing the quality on streaming video, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having an iPad with LTE, doesn't it? It seems like the impetus is on service providers to get with the times and adapt their pricing structure for next-generation wireless speeds. But what to change?

FLEX DATA

As you might have seen from out AT offering separate 2G, 3G, and 4G data plans would essentially be pre-emptive throttling for people who opt-in in exchange for lower rates, and an opportunity for heavy data users to guarantee consistent performance.

ROLL-OVER

If service providers are going to stick with data caps, it would be nice if we could use them after the month's up -we paid for those megabytes, after all. This is something prepaid voice service has done in the past, and seeing as new iPad owners aren't on a term contract, it would be a great fit. Some months you're going to spend on the move more than others, and it seems ridiculous that during those times, you've got to pay more even though the entire month before your iPad might have existed within reach of a Wi-Fi zone. Of course, it could be a huge stress on carriers if folks just stockpiled their data and went nuts on their LTE iPad in a short period of time. Those kinds of activity spikes are hard for carriers to deal with. Still, offering a spare unused GB from the last month or two could be all the wriggle room someone needs to go without paying overages or reconsidering their plans.

Of course, this whole issue would be cleared up if service providers just upped their data caps or lowered their prices, but I understand that they have shareholders to keep happy, and that involves making sure they aren't just giving away service. There's also the obvious issue of capacity; one would hope that as LTE networks mature, the situation will improve. These are just some ideas to get the conversation rolling, and I doubt any of them are a silver bullet to addressing the disparity between data speed demand and bandwidth supply, but the fact remains that it's becoming a problem that needs to be solved. I invite anyone from the retail or infrastructure side to comment on why some of the options would or wouldn't work. New LTE iPad owners, is there anything you would like to see on the service side, or is everything hunky-dory as is?

And while you're at it, jump into the new iPad forums and tell us how much 4G data you've used on your new iPad so far.

The Apple Store Had Become A Source Of A Developer S Dream To Come

The Apple Store Had Become A Source Of A Developer S Dream To Come Image

By Arsen Pereymer

The iPhone, being a revolutionary handset, has enforced radical changes in how people use cell phones. Also, it has become a key to a virtual gold mine wherein independent iPhone app developers can earn millions of dollars.

Step1

The iPhone, being a revolutionary handset, has enforced radical changes in how people use cell phones. Also, it has become a key to a virtual gold mine wherein independent iPhone app developers can earn millions of dollars.

Step 2

The Apple application store had been distinct and at the same time tumultuous because it had post changes in the way the mobile applications are delivered and developed. It had made an open market wherein developers can turn from rags to riches and earn money with minimal resources, as long as they have the talent and the luxury of time.

Step 3

Apple has brought down the roadblocks to entry when it comes to creating iPhone applications. Although Apple will carry out 30% of the total sales, they will be responsible in providing the sales, development platforms, billing and distribution. This will then allow the developers to fully concentrate on the things they love or doing best without having the anxiety about the distribution, marketing and setting up payments.

Step 4

After its launching on July 2008, the Apple Store had become a source of a developer's dream to come to a reality. For instance, Steve Demeter, the developer of the popular iPhone game called Trism had declared that he had attained 250,000 profit in only two months time. He had a few people helping him whom he had paid 500 each. If the flow continues at this rate, Demeter will roughly earn 2 million by the end of next year.

Step 5

Bart Decrem, CEO of Tapulous, had developed a free application called the Tap Tap Revenge which is a music-rhythm game that employs the use of the iPhone's accelerometer and touch screen features had attain a milestone of a total of 1,000,000 downloads in two weeks time after its launching. An estimated of 1.75 million users have downloaded the game, Tap Tap Revenge and Decrem expects to double it in the next months. To gain more profits, the company Tapulous had inserted advertisements in the game. In the near future, the company plans to release a new version for them to earn more money. Moreover, Decrem had been silent to disclose the exact profit money, but the estimated earning of the iPhone application that his company is earning about 5,000 to 10,000 daily.

Step 6

For the above two developers, according to them, the recipe to success is paying attention to every detail, keeping the application alive and engaging in variety of game play and at the same time, spreading popularity. You must come up with the generic idea and implement it properly in order for you to stand out. Both Trism and Tap Tap Revenge was initially become known in the Jailbreak community and it call forth a loyal coming before it was launched in the Application store for a broader market. Both the developers of this application look at the App store to be an exciting landscape to enjoy and at the same time earn. They have been considered themselves as big fishes in the pond that have future plans in emerging in the iPhone applications market.

The third way of downloading music on your iPhone 4 is by taking paid memberships. Many companies and websites these days are offering paid memberships to their customers to download music. By paying one time membership fee or paying the fee once in a life time option, you get to download unlimited tunes, old and latest songs, soundtracks to your iPhone. iPhone Uses A Fairly Simple Four Digit Numerical Password

iPhone Uses A Fairly Simple Four Digit Numerical Password Image
The default passcode for iPad and iPhone uses a fairly simple four digit numerical password, these are fairly easy to guess because statistically many people use common passwords or some variation of a simple theme, like a repetition, countdown, or birth year.

An easy way to add more security to an iOS device is to disable simple passcodes and utilize the full keyboard, here's how to enable this setting.

* Tap on "Settings" and tap "General"

* Tap on "Passcode Lock" and enter the current passcode

* Next to "Simple Passcode" slide the ON button so that it's off

* Enter the old simple 4 digit passcode, and then enter the new password based on the full keyboard and special characters

You can now use a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters, though using the latter can be difficult to remember since their placement is different on the iOS keyboard than a standard QWERTY layout.

Don't set something so complicated that you can't remember it yourself, though it isn't too difficult to reset if you need to, assuming you have access to a computer.

For those especially concerned with security, you can also set the iPhone or iPad to "self destruct" and automatically erase all data after 10 failed password attempts. This is also a fairly good anti-theft countermeasure, just make sure you don't forget it yourself or you could accidentally wipe your device.

While there may not seem to be too many differences between last year's iPad and this year's new iPad, when you're dealing with handcrafted designs, and old world materials like wood and leather, it pays to be perfect.

While we're waiting on the new gear, Pad & Quill president Brian Holmes was gracious enough to offer iMore readers %15 off any of their existing models. iPhone Nlp Apps For Your Phone

iPhone Nlp Apps For Your Phone Image
I now have an app on the market with a daily tip (NLP inspired of course). Whether you are already familiar with NLP or just curious, these tips will give you something to think about. They are not just designed for parents or for you as a parent but are personal (I don't mean X -rated!) and will resonate with you whatever you do or are in life.

I enjoyed writing them and even now, familiar as I am with NLP, I check my app every day and look at the thought. They still connect with me because they are about who we are and that is constantly changing as we meet new people and have new experiences.

I would be enormously grateful if you would post a review of the app and share it with your friends on Twitter or Linked In, Facebook etc

The Company Has Already Launched iPhone

The Company Has Already Launched iPhone Image
TVGuide.com has acquired social TV startup Fav.Tv in what executive vice president and general manager Christy Tanner says is a straightforward talent acquisition.

Plenty of startups are trying to reinvent the tv guide - including Fav.Tv, which was described, when it launched last fall, as not "your grandmother's TV Guide." But TVGuide.com (which operates the TV Guide digital properties while licensing the name to the print magazine publisher) has been trying to evolve too. It unveiled a new feature in August called Watchlist, which incorporates social elements, as well as on-demand/digital listings. Tanner credits Watchlist as one of the driving forces in the website's growth from 4 million to 24 million unique monthly visitors.

TVGuide.com has also sold 80 sponsorships around its social features, making it "one of the very very very few actually making money from social TV," she says.

The company has already launched iPhone, Android, and iPad apps, but Tanner says they haven't incorporated the Watchlist yet because the company is focused on "getting it right." Fav.tv's two engineers will be working on the mobile apps. As for the Fav.tv apps and site, well, they're following the predictable path of talent acquisitions - they'll be shut down soon, and the startup is already pointing its users to set up Watchlist accounts.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Tanner says, "It's not a big deal. It's a very small deal."

The Best and Worst iPod Car Audio Solutions

Love them or hate them, iPods are everywhere. Until recently I tied myself to a ship mast and resisted the nearly irresistible siren song of the iPod. I should’ve used stronger rope or better ear plugs, because now I carry an iPhone in my pocket every day. With that, comes an iPod. Being an audiophile, music is a big deal to me, it isn’t some background noise or the faint soundtrack to the movie of my life. Music is the movie, if you will, so it needs to sound as good as possible.
Piping all of that gigacrazy music into your car’s audio system is easier than ever with today’s technology. That also means, inevitably, there are some really jank ways to transfer sound from the iPod to the car stereo. Since there are so many music enthusiasts in the world and many new music lovers that have no clue about car audio, we thought we would set the record straight and take a look at some of the best and worst options for iPod integration. If you’re using one of the worst options—look, we’re not trying to make you look bad; we simply want you to do yourself a favor and upgrade. Since we are talking about basic integration, the focus here is mostly on stock head units; that is, connecting your iPod to your factory radio. We’ll take a look at other types of iPod connectivity in a separate article. Worst It is appropriate to start with the worst options, since these are where many beginner enthusiasts get started with integration, the main reason being that they are cheap, simple and easy to install. The problem with these devices is that they seriously inhibit sound quality, not to mention that in some cases they can damage the stereo itself. FM Modulator “Bringing you the absolute worst audio since AM” should be the slogan for FM-modulators. To be clear though FM radio transmissions are not bad, they use high-powered antennas to broadcast a signal through the air and cover up to 100 or so miles. The tiny 12-volt powered FM-Modulator sitting in the ashtray of your car broadcasts a weak signal about ten feet, to the car’s antenna, where it has to fight much more powerful signals to get picked up. Unfortunately we know a lot of you are actually opting for this easy and inferior solution. We understand the temptation. Installation is easy—plug it in, tune your radio to 88-whatever (or another low-digit where there is no radio station signal) and rock out as best you can with the extra richness of static enhancement. Just because it is cheap does not mean it is a good idea. There are other options that aren’t that expensive. If you absolutely MUST use an FM Modulator, buy one that actually plugs in between the radio and the antenna. When it is on, it interrupts the signal to the radio from the antenna, improving the sound quality by limiting the other more powerful signals that interfere. DICE Electronics and other smart manufacturers make such solutions (look at the stand-alone review here). Cassette Tape Adapter Rockin’ it old-school with a tape deck? Holy crud. Unfortunately, we know there are some of you using this option as well! Don’t ruin your tape deck with a cassette adapter to get your music (not that we particularly care about cassette players!). Cassette tape adapters are commonly included in iPod accessory bundles because they are cheap to make and work. Besides the inherent issues with transferring music through the headphone jack, these cassette tape adapters will quickly ruin the tape head in the stereo, so your grandma’s Johnny Mathis tape won’t play. She probably won’t let you borrow her car any more after that. You were driving your grandma’s car, right? Why else would you be in a car with a tape deck? Headphone to 1.5mm Connector Even though this is a better solution than the first two in terms of audio quality, if your car has a 1.5mm jack (headphone size auxiliary input) or even an RCA input on the back of the radio, it still won’t sound that good. The iPod does some funky things to the audio that comes out of the headphone jack, not to mention that we’ve owned a few iPods and that’s the only part that’s mechanically failed. The jack was junk! Since headphones are small, heavy bass passages tend to overdrive the tiny speakers. For this reason, Apple chose to limit the bottom end output via the headphone jack. The result is less-than-stellar bass output and an anemic sound. There are fixes for this, like the AudioControl Epicenter, which rebuilds the lost lower frequencies that the iPod steals away. But that’s practically another story. The headphone jack is not the best method of getting digital music out of your iPod, unless you are actually using headphones. Better While streaming the music through the air with an FM Modulator is not a good solution, Bluetooth is not a bad option. If your radio has the capability, then streaming from your iPhone or other Bluetooth-enabled iPod provides decent quality sound to your head unit. There is some quality loss and with no hard connection the battery won’t be charging. Compound that with the fact that streaming Bluetooth audio can suck down the battery in short order. You say your head unit does not offer Bluetooth? Aftermarket accessories like the Parrot MKi9200 hands-free devices allow you to stream from your iPhone or iPod through the Parrot unit which can be connected to the radio through various means. These are nice because you stream your music and talk handsfree at the same time.
Best There are really fine alternatives, but most involve aftermarket head units. Unless you have a brand new car with a premium stereo system like the Ford Sync or Dodge UConnect, you need a better way to transfer your tunes. Some of these are simple installations, while others are a little more complicated. Each has its benefits and drawbacks. Direct connection The connection on the bottom of the iPod/iPhone is the best way to get the original data out and into the radio. There are numerous methods of direct connection. And many newer cars have an iPod port or optional direct connection cable. Most aftermarket head units have some version of direct connection. For factory stereos, the direct connection is almost always iPod specific, whereas aftermarket head units may use USB connection to allow for many different types of PMP (Personal Media Player) devices and then a specific iPod adapter. There are of course aftermarket head units that have iPod connections. There are different levels of direct connection.
Music Only These connections provide basic data transfer and possibly battery charging. These do not provide control of the iPod and may or may not provide song data like titles or ID3 tags. Full Control These connections, usually from an OEM head unit or aftermarket iPod-specific connection not only transfer the music, but also provide charging and full control of the iPod from the radio. This is nice because you can just put the iPod in the glove box or console and have full access to the music.
There are so many options to get the iPod music into the radio, there is even a way of using your iPod as your head unit. And we’re not talking about an iPod-dedicated mechless unit like the ones by Alpine. We’re talking iPod as the source. You heard me. Kicker is getting ready to introduce their latest module that combined with a piece or two from Soundgate, allows you to use the iPod as the main source unit to supply your amps with the electronic signals we call music.
In reality, the new module, called the Kicker Dual-Zone Remote Level Control (model ZRMRLC), is level control (JL Audio has the CL-RLC) but with two distinct controllers, which is of course the cool part. You can have the front speakers play at one volume and the rear speakers play at another volume. If you are using an iPod as the source, one zone can be the mids and highs, and the second zone can control the subwoofer output, just like a head unit subwoofer control. Using the Soundgate Core device and cable pack (models REMCORE and PDCBLPKS respectively), the iPod will have a direct connection to the amplifiers and the battery will charge. This works for iPhone and iPod units, so all you Apple heads are covered. As long as you are using amps for all of your speakers, this is a great solution for hot rods and muscle cars as well as any other vehicle. If you use splitters, you can wire the Kicker dual-zone control in-line with a non-iPod interfaced head unit and use the head unit for CDs and radio, then turn it off completely and use the iPod when you want to. There are a lot of possibilities with this system.
It can be tough deciphering all of the options in accessories for the iPod. If you follow this guide, you will be able to pick out which method is best for you and your car. Sometimes you don’t have much choice but use an FM-modulator, specifically on an older car with nothing but FM/AM and you can’t or refuse to swap it out. In this instance, adding an amp and using the Kicker module is a great idea.

iPod Classic in an Audi S4

One of my main goals was to get something semi-integrated with little to no wires. Ideally just ONE wire that will both charge my ipod and send clean audio to my NAV/Radio unit. I didn't want a separate wire to go to my cigarette lighter or anything, as it adds clutter and wires. I wanted it to be entirely black and free from noticeable design cues to match my black interior. Here's my interior right now:
On the steering wheel are radio controls that double as the cellphone bluetooth interface.
I wanted to control the playlist and song selection through the steering wheel, but still maintain control through the ipod for more advanced functions. I also wanted to mount the ipod close the radio controls for easy access, but also be able to simply dock the ipod without much effort to hide it in the armrest/glovebox for when I park the car. After some research I found the DICE iPod adapter here:
The model number suggests that it's for VWs, but it actually interfaces with my glovebox CD Changer. Actually, it REPLACES the CD Changer and renders it useless. As I never use CDs anyway, and I still have the single DVD/CD changer in-dash, I don't mind losing the CD Changer. I also paired it with the DICE iPod cradle:
This cradle allows the wire to be plugged into the back of the unit, and has several adapters for different sized ipods, perfect for the 160gb Classic and other ipods that I have. The dock also has a video out function that, if I was so inclined, could run to my NAV unit to watch movies. It also works very will in that I can just lift the ipod in and out without having to mess with the cable or pinch any releasing buttons. On my old Audi, I had it setup where I had to slide my ipod into the mount, then attach the cable. Then, when I wanted to put it away, I had to pinch the releasing buttons on the cable (much like the apple usb cable) to release it, then lift the ipod out: (old iPod in my old Audi A4)
As you can see the cable would be left dangling there if the ipod were removed. With the DICE cradle I can just lift it out with minimal fuss, and there was no cable left dangling. As for mounting plate I chose the PROCLIP angled mount at http://ww.proclip.com I don't have to remove the radio to install it, and it doesn't require drilling. Here are the final results... Sorry for the crappy pics, it was getting dark and things get grainy.
The DICE cradle allows for a bit of rotation so I was able to get it to tilt a little bit to match the orientation of all the other components and the slant of the center console bolsters. Looks pretty good imho. The only thing I don't like is the white DICE logo. I'll have to figure out a way to remove/mask it tastefully. The black Ipod Classic also goes well with my black and carbon fiber interor.
See that wire coming out of the top? It's actually running behind the proclip mounting plate, so there is no loose wire hanging out from underneath the ipod. Very clean. The wire runs up and behind the carbon fiber trim. There is a little space behind the trim where I wedged the wire into. It runs right to the top of the CD changer in the glovebox (sorry no pics), so even with the glovebox open, it's nice and wire free... all you see is the CD changer and a wire coming out of the top to the top of the glovebox. Audi was smart enough to leave a small gap between the CD Changer and the surrounding CD mount for a wire. The glovebox opens and closes like normal without any wires to get in the way at all. Functions: With the DICE cradle and wiring kit the Ipod comes on when I start the car. I access the ipod through the CD CHANGER button on my Nav/Radio. It charges while it plays and I can use the steering wheel to go to the next/previous track. I can also choose one of 6 CDs in my radio to function as a way to navigate the ipod. For instance, if I have CD 1 selected, my steering wheel buttons chose next/prev song. With CD2 it's next/prev playlist, with CD3 is next/prev album, etc... I haven't read the manual completely yet so I don't know all these functions, either way all i wanted was next/prev song, so I am happy. Volume is controlled by the radio, which is also controllable by the steering wheel. I DON'T LIKE IT when other setups give you volume control on the ipod, because that usually means that the optimal volume is at approx 75% of max volume on the ipod. Even then, you can never be sure. If you are just a little over the optimum volume on the ipod, you get distortion and just bad sounding audio. Good setups give you volume control on the radio, as it's closer to a true line out. Also, with volume control on the radio, my radio also lowers the volume when navigation information is told through the speakers... but only when it knows the volume of what your listening to is too high for you to hear the directions... a nice function you wouldn't get if the ipod was controlling the volume. My ipod also pauses when I switch to radio or switch to the cellphone bluetooth functions. It also resumes play when I go back to the ipod. These are just more nice functions that minimize me having to hit play etc, and take my eyes off the road. Overall I love this setup and I highly recommend it. My only complaint is that sometimes the ipod pauses if it gets fully charged... quite annoying, but I can just hit play again. Not sure if this is a DICE or an IPOD problem. The ipod uses the line power anyway once it's charged, so you only get this pause once during your drive. The audio is clean and distortion/static free. I've tried FM transmitters and Tape adapters, and they all sound like crap compared to this. IMHO if you are a fan of music, and you can afford a $350 160gb ipod, then you should be able to afford to listen to it the right way in your car. In theory your HUGE 160gb music collection is worth WAY MORE, or you just want to have the biggest/expensive ipod just because you CAN. So shell out a little more $ for the right setup. That's my opinion anyway. Here's a breakdown of the expenses without tax and shipping and rounded off: DICE wiring kit: $145 DICE cradle: $54 Proclip Mounting plate: $35 TOTAL: ~$234.00 This works for my Nano, my wife's Nano, my 60GB 5G, and my 160gb Classic. Lastly here's a gratuitous shot of my giant ipod player: It's a limited edition (#33 of 250) Audi S4 25quattro. All wheel drive, 6 speed, 340hp, carbon fiber front lip/rear spoiler/interior trim, dual exhaust, sport suspension, DTM body kit, and Recaro interior.

You Could Use An iPhone

You Could Use An iPhone Image
Attention avid video callers: according to early reviews, the new 3rd-generation iPad won't be able to make FaceTime calls over LTE. Given how popular we're all expecting the new iPad to be, I wouldn't be surprised if carriers put the lock-down on FaceTime in order to keep their LTE networks speedy. Alternatively, Apple may have set a high bar for FaceTime performance, and aren't 100% confident that LTE isn't reliable enough, even with its high transfer speeds when you've got coverage.

The funny thing is, you could use an iPhone as a portable hotspot to get FaceTime on the new iPad, or vice versa if you're packing an iPhone 4 and an LTE iPad with hotspot enabled. In any case, for the vast majority of iPad fans this is not going to be a dealbreaker. Anyone who's really dying for video calling through a cellular network can always pick up the Skype app for iPad.

iPhone Through Cloud Gaming Services

iPhone Through Cloud Gaming Services Image
In a recent interview, Blizzard senior producer John Lagrave said "it would be foolish for any game developer to not be looking " at getting their game onto the iPhone, and admitted that they have been exploring how to get World of Warcraft into the mobile interface. There are particular systems of the massively multiplayer online fantsy game that they could conceivably transfer to mobile; specifically, Lagrave said fishing is something that could make the cut, as well as pet battles, a feature coming in their next content expansion. Of course, he also says that there are challenges they have yet to conquer.
We won't do it until we think it's decent. Maybe we'll stumble on the great way to put WoW on the phone - maybe we won't, but we're certainly looking into it. When we have an epiphany, everyone will know, but for now, no epiphany!
We've seen WoW on the iPhone through cloud gaming services similar to OnLive (or VNC work-arounds), but a proper mobile client would be awesome. The new iPad may very well be the point where a mobile device will be able to handle the full graphics capabilities that such a game has to bear on its own, but there would need to be at least a little bit of scaling down; the current install on PC takes up 25 GB, which isn't an amount of space most folks can spare on their iPad for a single game.

Blizzard has already been active in the mobile world through their Remote app for iOS and Android, but they're charging an extra 3/month on top of the 10/month subscription fee for the privilege of selling loot on the auction house and chatting with guildmates while on the go. If Blizzard ever did get around to bringing the full (or even parts of) World of Warcraft to the iPhone, I hope they would just include the features in the existing Remote app rather charging even more. Otherwise, they'll have a hard time competing in the mobile world where free-to-play with a side order of microtransactions is a common sight. Beyond that, Blizzard also has a mobile authenticator app to add extra protection to your Battle.net account.

Until Blizzard gets around to making this happen, Gameloft has a decent clone called Order and Chaos on sale for significantly cheaper than what you would pay for WoW.
