Apple Inc How To Create Custom iPhone Ringtones With Garageband

Apple Inc How To Create Custom iPhone Ringtones With Garageband Image

By Alexia Petrakos

Nintey-nine cents isn't a huge price to pay for a song, but if you already have a gigantic collection of music in your iTunes library and want to use one of those songs as a ringtone for your iPhone, 99 cents is a bit of a stretch. Apple now allows user-created custom ringtones for the iPhone. All you need is iLife's latest version of Garageband and iTunes and you're ready to turn any song in your iTunes library into a 40-second looped ringtone.

Step 1

Launch iTunes.

Step 2

Launch GarageBand.

Step 3

Select "New Music Project" if this is the first time you've opened GarageBand.

Step 4

Click "Create." There is no need to type in a name for the project.

Step 5

Select all tracks (if there are any) on the GarageBand workspace, click "Track" > "Delete Track" to start with a fresh work area.

Step 6

Drag and drop the song you want to make into a ringtone from iTunes into GarageBand. This will make a new track you can edit.

Step 7

Click the "Cycle Region" button on the bottom of the screen--the one with two arrows looped in on itself.

Step 8

Drag the yellow bar above the track's timeline, called the "region loop tool," to the spot you want to begin your ringtone.

Step 9

Expand the region loop tool by clicking on one of the ends and dragging it along the timeline to the part of the song you want to use as a ringtone. The limit is 40 seconds.

Step 10

Click "Share" on the menu bar and select "Send Ringtone to iTunes". GarageBand converts the song to the.m4r format that iPhones use for ringtones, and it will save it to your iTunes ringtone library.

Step 11

Sync your iPhone to iTunes to upload the new ringtones.

Apple Would Be In A Position To Claim Patents

Apple Would Be In A Position To Claim Patents Image
Apple is butting heads with RIM, Motorola, and Nokia over the next evolution of SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card sizes. SIM cards are used by GSM and LTE carriers to attach numbers and service plans to mobile devices like iPhones and iPads. After paving the way for the micro-SIM format, which has since been adopted by Nokia for their Lumia series, Apple is now putting pressure on the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to recognize a their new nano-SIM format as the next industry standard. What's the problem? Well, competitors worry that Apple would be in a position to claim patents on the nano-SIM format, and if it was set as the universal standard, they could all end up paying royalties. There's also a concern that other vendors would be stuck with Apple's design even if they think they've come up with something better.

On top of that, Apple might skew the voting process, having recently applied six of their subsidiaries for membership in the council. This would oust Nokia as the largest voting member. Service providers are all for the nano-SIMs, in any case, and they're supporting Apple's proposal to ETSI. Voting at ETSI starts next week.

The nano-SIM would be 30% smaller and 15% thinner than the micro-SIMs currently found in iPhones and iPads, and that means more room in smartphones for other good stuff. iMore previously heard Apple was intent on moving away from the traditional 30-pin Dock port towards a "micro-Dock" connector due to similar space considerations.

Soundclip For iPhone

Soundclip For iPhone Image
Whether you are someone who uses the external sound through the built in speaker of your iPhone 3G for handsfree purposes when driving, or just want to listen to the music on your iPhone at a low volume in the park on a nice sunny day, Soundclip for iPhone 3G from TenOne Design is a nifty little accessory that enhances the sound coming from your iPhone.

The built in speaker in the iPhone 3G is not half bad, but once the volume gets a bit high, say while driving and using the functionality as handsfree, as we do not want to break the law, the sound can often become less clear and distorted. This is where the Soundclip for iPhone 3G from TenOne Design comes into play.

SoundClip easily clips onto the 30 pin dock connector of your iPhone 3G and immediately amplifies the external sound from your iPhone by 10dB between 5kH and 20kHz.

If you enjoy playing games on your iPhone 3G you will be glad to know that the SoundClip does not get blocked by your hand while playing. The only downside to this nifly little iPhone gadget is that you have to detach it to be able to charge your iPhone, and it is not compatible with the extended batteries for the iPhone 3G.

The price however makes the SoundClip a very affordable gadget for your iPhone 3G, as it is priced at about $7.95. We will get back with more information about where to buy the SoundClip in the UK. In the US it can be bought through TenOne Design website.

The iPhone Can Not Cope With The Image Quality Of A Good Digital Camera

The iPhone Can Not Cope With The Image Quality Of A Good Digital Camera Image
Sure, the iPhone can not cope with the image quality of a good digital camera but it's great for snapshots and ShakeItPhoto- or Hipstamatic-experiments. That's why I'm collecting a lot of pictures on my iPhone from time to time. Sometimes I sync the pictures with iPhoto. But I'm not always using the delete-after-import feature. The current version of iPhoto does not have any problems with that if you use the "Hide Photos Already Imported" option: iPhoto just ignores the old photos and only downloads the previews of the new ones in the import section.

But there is no way to delete all or a selection of these old photos in iPhoto, iTunes or on the iPhone. But the only solution to delete these photos one-by-one on the iPhone is not working with hundrets of photos. So, what to do?

Every Mac ships with a standard Apple utility which helps you out It's called "Image Capture" (or on German Mac OS X systems "Digitale Bilder"). This utility shows all images on the iPhone. You can select all or only a selection of these pictures and you're able to delete them right away! Here is how to:

* Connect your iPhone via USB with your Mac.

* If iTunes or iPhoto starts, wait for the sync, and press the iPhone-disconnect button within the itunes window. Make sure, that you quit iTunes and iPhoto.

* Open "Image Capture" from the applications folder.

* Select your iPhone in the left column and a list of the iPhone photos will be displayed on the right.

* Select the photos, you want to delete - or select all pictures by pressing command-A.
* Now press on the red delete button just beneath the list. If you're sure, that you want to delete the pictures you can confirm the deletion. WARNING: YOU CANNOT RECOVER THE DELETED PHOTOS - SO BE SURE, THAT YOU IMPORTED THEM TO IPHOTO BEFORE!

Apple Inc Privacy Block iPhone Apps From Spying On You

Apple Inc Privacy Block iPhone Apps From Spying On You Image
Saurick has released PrivaCy, an iPhone app that blocks iPhone apps from watching what you do on your phone. PrivaCy is available for free in Cydia. "It has recently come to the attention of angry Cydia users that they are being watched by many of the applications they have installed from the App Store.

Sites like I-phone-home have been discussing this in detail, leading to a post on the Dev-Team Blog about one provider in particular: Pinch Media.

Pinch Media, however, is not the only tracking provider: on the iPhone alone there are three other companies: Flurry, Medialets, and Mobclix.

Developers integrate these systems for much the same reason people use Google Analytics: to better understand how their customers use their products.

Unfortunately, due to the restrictions Apple places on their App Store, these providers are unable to directly interface with the users they affect.

Instead, they rely on developers of every single application to document what information is being logged, and allow users to "opt-out" if they desire.

Thanks to applicatons like redsn0w and Cydia, however, these restrictions are no longer important: a system-wide global "opt-out" setting is now possible.

Pinch Media realized this fact, and took the lead in contacting me regarding getting this feature out there to all the users of jailbroken devices: they care.

With BigBoss, we then contacted all of the other providers, getting not only their blessing, but also their technical expertise in disabling their systems.

The result is PrivaCy: a new Settings panel that allows you to selectively opt-out of sending anonymous usage statistics to each of these providers.

This extension was a team effort, and was able to be executed as quickly as it was thanks to the help and interest of the companies involved."

Apple Says That Wi-fi Sync Occurs When The iOS Device Is Plugged In To Power

Apple Says That Wi-fi Sync Occurs When The iOS Device Is Plugged In To Power Image
Battery life with my iPhone 4S was very poor, and I finally discovered why: I'm using a battery extender case. The problem is that the phone considers that the case is a source of AC power, so if have iTunes Wi-Fi sync on - which only operates when your phone is plugged in - you'll be syncing more than you might expect, since your phone is technically plugged in.

The solution is to either turn off Wi-Fi sync, or use an external battery pack that has an on-off switch so that you can control when it is actually sending current to the phone.

[KIRKMC ADDS: I guess this makes sense. Apple says that Wi-Fi sync occurs when "The iOS device is plugged in to power." But this should only occur if two other conditions are met: "iTunes is open on the computer," and "The iOS device and the computer are on the same Wi-Fi network." So I would think that if you're not on the same network as your Mac, then nothing should hap...

Apple Corps V Computer

Apple Corps V Computer Image
TRUE, APPLE WILL NOT ABLE TO GROW OVER THE NEXT 15 YEARS AS MUCH AS IT HAS GROWN OVER THE LAST 15. BUT CEO TIM COOK HAS LISTED SEVERAL REASONS WHY THE TECH GIANT STILL HAS PLENTY OF ROOM LEFT TO RUN.

Apple CEO Tim Cook

FORTUNE -- Apple doesn't waste time. Its own, or anyone else's. That's what I thought when I disconnected my phone Monday at 6:23 a.m., at the conclusion of the Apple teleconference to discuss its new dividend-payment plans.

In 23 minutes, the company got out all its facts, answered some questions, prepared financial markets for its news and wrapped things up -- all while sticking to a carefully prepared script to explain the dividend and share buyback news.

Speaking of the script, and given how efficient Apple (AAPL) is with time, it's worthwhile to pause a day later to reflect on some of the elements of the message. Near the beginning of the call, in his prepared remarks, Apple CEO Tim Cook gave a short homily on why implementing a dividend does not mean Apple will quit investing in its future or that it doesn't see growth opportunities. These are the reasons many tech companies give for "not "paying a dividend. Because we know the list is scripted, we know Cook and his communications team thought about each item on the list. So let's consider each item, why Cook mentioned it, and how he rank-ordered them.

"We are innovating at an incredible pace," Cook began, immediately launching into his list, which I will number and annotate:

1. "BUILDING A TREMENDOUS ECOSYSTEM WITH APPS AND CONTENT." We all know about Apple's App Store ecosystem by now. The choice of the word "content" was interesting. Apple reportedly is discussing content deals with film and TV studios -- who, gloriously, leak more than the record companies did when iTunes was getting started. Apple also is building its e-book business, the subject of a Justice Department anti-trust investigation. It's noteworthy that Cook led here.

2. "PROVIDING GREAT SERVICES SUCH AS ICLOUD, WHICH HAS ALREADY ECLIPSED OVER 100 MILLION USERS WITHIN JUST A FEW MONTHS OF ITS LAUNCH." For what it's worth, the people who like to chatter about this sort of thing don't consider iCloud a "great" service yet. It is clearly important to Apple, however.

MORE: CAN APPLE\'S STOCK REACH 1,368?

3. "AND WE'RE DELIVERING INCREDIBLE DEVELOPMENTS LIKE SIRI, A PROFOUND NEW WAY TO INTERFACE WITH THE IPHONE." Love it or hate it -- I don't love Siri yet -- the success of the iPhone 4S makes a mockery of those who were disappointed that it wasn't the iPhone 5. (I also don't love the use of "interface" as a verb. But I digress.)

4. "WE ARE ALSO INVESTING IN DISTRIBUTION AROUND THE WORLD." Oh? More would have been great about this.

5. "WE CONTINUE TO OPEN OUR OWN STORES, INCLUDING 40 THIS FISCAL YEAR ALONE." The Apple retail juggernaut continues, with or without Ron Johnson, now CEO at J.C. Penney (JCP).

6. "WE ARE EXPANDING OUR FOOTPRINT WITH NEW CARRIER PARTNERS AND OTHER THIRD-PARTY RESELLERS." Ho-hum. Boring business stuff. But wowza, more telecom partners than you've already got? And more retailers in addition to the likes of Best Buy (BBY), Walmart (WMT), and so on? Okay, good.

7. "AND WE ARE INVESTING IN OUR DIRECT ENTERPRISE SALES FORCE." What was that? Calling out for all to hear that Apple is paying attention to "the enterprise," also known as business customers, also known as the kind of IT buyers Steve Jobs despised? This part was truly interesting. It's not news, by the way. Apple has been quietly building its enterprise sales force for years now. But emphasizing it in the context of how and why Apple is investing for growth was extremely telling.

MORE: THE DAY APPLE BECAME NORMAL

And then Cook summed up:

Simply stated, we don't see ceilings to our opportunities. All of this innovation and success have led to the generation of substantial amounts of cash, both domestically and abroad. We have used some of our cash to make great investments in our business to increase research and development, acquisitions, new retail store openings, strategic prepayments in capital expenditures in our supply chain, and building out of our infrastructure, and you will see more of all of these in the future.

There's no question about it: Apple will not be able to grow over the next 15 years as much as it has grown over the last 15 years. Yet reading this list -- and reading between the lines of why Tim Cook chose what he chose to list -- it's hard to challenge the argument that this half-a-trillion-dollar company has plenty of room left to run.

"Fortune Senior Editor at Large Adam Lashinsky is author of Inside Apple: How America's Most Admired--and Secretive--Company Really Works, which is full of witty analysis similar to the contents of this post."

Apple Inc Itether Returns As Tether New Html 5 iPhone Tethering Service

Apple Inc Itether Returns As Tether New Html 5 iPhone Tethering Service Image
A few tethering applications have appeared in the App Store only to be pulled very soon after. One such application was iTether, it appeared back in November 2011 and was pulled on the same day it launched. The app cost 14.99 and used USB to connect your Mac to your iPhone to use its data connection. The app bypassed the usual carrier tethering charges which probably explains why it was pulled.

Now the developer behind iTether has returned with a new service which is simply called Tether. The new service is based on HTML 5 so there is no need to source the app through the App Store.
"It was clear from our initial application iTether, there was enormous demand within the iPhone ecosystem," says Tim Burke, CEO of Tether. "It was unfortunate that Apple decided to remove our application, only 20 hours after we launched. However, this caused us to innovate. Our underlying patent-pending technology behind Tether for iPhone is unlike anything on the market." Tether's new version for the iPhone is purely based on HTML5 and creates a completely wireless connection over AdHoc. This circumvents the need of buying the application directly from Apple's App Store and allows any iPhone or iPad with a data connection to allow tethering.
Tether is available as a once a year purchase of 30 and is compatible with Windows as well as Mac. There is currently no trial version so you can't test it before you part with your money. You can see exactly how it works in the video below!

Our iPhone Users

Our iPhone Users Image
At the WWDC Keynote, Steve Jobs unveiled the many great features of the newly released OS X Lion. The Keynote continued to highlight the sale of more than than 200 million IOS devices. "That makes iOS the number one mobile operating system, with more than 44% of the market."

To talk more about the IOS 5, Scott Forstall enters the stage. In reference to the iPad 2, Scott Forstall says, "It is an amazing product, and our customers just couldn't wait to get their hands on it actually they did have to wait."

"More than 15 billion songs have been sold through the iTunes Music Store, making it the #1 retailer of music in the world."

Forstall also explains that Apple has paid out more than 2.5 billion to developers -- big check signed by Steve Jobs on the screen.

Now, getting to the IOS 5, "iOS 5 is a major release. This is incredible for our developers and our customers."

The first new feature discussed is Notifications. We're looking at the current notifications, the annoying pop-ups that have been "massively popular." More than 100 billion have been pushed so far! The notification center aggregates all the notifications. It is accessed by swiping down from the top. Notifications will no longer be interrupted with the activity on the ios.

The next new feature on the IOS 5 is the Newsstand. Scott Forstall says, "Recently we added subscriptions, which makes it easier to get all the new issues without missing anything." When you have purchased your news publications, they are automatically downloaded and placed on the Newsstand. It is integrated on the home screen making it look like a news stand.

Furthermore, the new issues are automatically downloaded in the background, and also available to users offline.

The third new feature discussed in the Keynote is TWITTER! "We want to make it even easier for all our customers to use Twitter on all their iOS products." There is a single sign-on and you're configured for Twitter. Those credentials are then saved and there will be no need to sign in again and again. Twitter photos and the @ usernames can also be pulled automatically into contacts.

Twitter can also be integrated with many apps, including Camera and Photos. Just tap the action button, hit " and it's attached. "It's that simple."

Another great featured added in IOS 5 is TABBED BROWSING!

"It is lightning fast to switch between windows now." You just have to tap one of the tabs and -boom, your there.

Reading List is another feature, you can save publications (just like bookmarking them) in a reading list for later reading.

Another feature, Reminders allows users to store lists of things and assign them to any dates, plus you can also assign a location. It'll sync across devices, and with Cal.

The iPhone 4 camera is one of the best cameras on mobile, now there is a Camera button on the lock screen. Once you tap on the camera icon and you're right in the Camera app, ready to take a photo.

When you click on the photo icon, it will immediately take you to the photo and you can click as many photos without having to slide the lock key or enter a pass code if you've sent one up. Additionally, you can also use the volume button to take a picture now! You can also pinch to zoom right in the app.

Pictures can also be edited on the ios 5 now. You can crop, rotate, reduce red-eye, and you can do a one click enhance.

Many changes are brought to Mail in IOS 5 now as well. Rich-text formatting, indentation control, draggable addresses (from To: to Cc: or Bcc:), flagging so you can mark them as unread, and now you can search the entire contents of messages. S/MIME is being added as well, for the security mavens. Furthermore, there is also an addition of a built-in dictionary that's a service across the OS. "All apps from the App Store can use it."

Next up is the Game Center. "iOS is the most popular gaming platform on the planet. There are more than 100,000 game and entertainment titles in the App Store." Games can be purchased and dowloaded directly from the game center. You can also see what scores your friends earned in what game and compete with them.

"In just 9 months we have 50 million Game Center users. To put that into perspective Xbox Live has been around for about eight years and they have around 30 million users."

Next feature: iMessage

"I believe we have the best messaging client on the iPhone. It works tremendously well to send text messages and photos and our customers love it -- our iPhone users. But what about our iPad users, and our iPod touch users?"

With iMesssage, users are able to send text messages, photos, videos, contacts, and even do group messaging. For example, one can start a convo on your iPhone and pick it up on your iPad, or the reverse if you're into that.

"iOS 5 will ship to all of our customers this fall."

Apple Ceo Tim Cook Just Traded In 37 500 Shares For A Grand Total Image
Right now, one (1) share of Apple costs roughly the same as a new iPad, and Apple CEO Tim Cook just traded in 37,500 shares for a grand total of 11.1 million. Yeah.

For the last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook has been holding onto a bunch of restricted Apple stock awarded to him when he first took up day-to-day leadership duties when Steve Jobs left on medical leave. On March 10, the restriction was lifted on a bunch of that stock, which allowed him to sell. 17,322 of those shares were surrendered for taxes, but the other 20,178 were all sold yesterday over the span of five separate sales throughout the day.

Cook recieved another million shares when he signed on as CEO that he'll be able to sell in 2016 and 2021, and no doubt he's holding even more stock beyond that; Cook's definitely in it for the long haul. The street doesn't seem to mind the sale -- in fact, prices have climbed from 556 this morning to 568.
