Paypal Bid For The Digital Wallet Looks Strong

Paypal Bid For The Digital Wallet Looks Strong Image
EVERYONE FROM APPLE TO VISA IS LOOKING TO SHAPE THE WAY WE SPEND MONEY IN THE DIGITAL AGE. AS PAYPAL ROLLS OUT PIECES OF ITS NEW PLATFORM, IT'S LOOKING LIKE A STRONG CONTENDER FOR A BROAD NEW STANDARD.

"by Kevin Kelleher, contributor"

FORTUNE -- As long as the Internet has been a venue for commerce, some companies have dreamed of making electronic cash as seamless and intuitive to use as possible: no cash or coins, no check-writing, no typing in or storing credit card numbers. Thanks to the rise of the cloud and the popularity of smarphones, that idea is becoming real.

As a result, the names of companies working to create a so-called digital wallet is growing: startups like Square, big-name companies like eBay (EBAY), Google (GOOG) and Apple (AAPL) or financial services giants like Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA) - each hoping for a key role in what could in coming years become a lucrative market.

No company has been working longer at this goal than PayPal. Back when people spoke less of the cloud and more about grid computing, and when mobile phones were too big to fit comfortably inside a pocket, PayPal was laying the foundation for a global e-payment system - working through regulatory processes in hundreds of countries, grappling with myriad forms of online fraud and fielding customer complaints.

MORE: YAHOO\'S RISK-TAKING MAY BE ITS BEST CHANCE

Today, PayPal works with 9 million merchants and 106 million active customers. And over the past couple of years, the eBay (EBAY) unit has been quietly assembling a strategy to create a digital wallet for those customers, and potentially many more. But it means improving on offerings from competitors, some of which have large customer bases and ample cash reserves.

It also means placing bets on which standards consumers and merchants will embrace. Will Square-like dongles become an everyday accessory in retail? Or will near-field communications overcome security concerns and become the norm? Will credit- and debit- accounts continue to play a central role? And most importantly, which brands will emerge as the most trusted consumer interface to mobile payments?

Slowly, PayPal's strategy is becoming clearer. After buying startups such as BillMeLater, shopping-engine Milo and app developers WHERE and Redlaser, PayPal has begun rolling out new features - most recently its PayPal Here service. Announced last week, PayPal Here was widely seen as a competitor of Square, the startup noted for the dongle that plugs into smartphones for on-the-spot payments in stores and restaurants.

Square is catching on with many retailers. PayPal says it saw 4 billion in mobile payments in 2011 and that it expects to top 7 billion this year. But Square also says it processed 4 billion in payments last year, largely from small brick-and-mortar retailers that PayPal has tended to overlook.

MORE: WHERE SOCIAL NETWORKING IS HEADED NEXT

Both companies are quickly moving beyond the simple dongle. Square offers Card Case, an iPhone app that lets people pay Square's retail clients without swiping a plastic card. PayPal Here also allows wireless payments with participating retailers. Through a partnership with Card.io, PayPal Here can also take a photo of a credit card instead of using a dongle.

But PayPal Here is just one part of what the company is planning in what is shaping up to be an ambitious strategy. Over the past two months, PayPal has rolled out its payment technology to nearly 2,000 Home Depot stores as an alternative to credit cards. It's partnered with Ingenico and AJB Software Designs to create an in-store payment system that can be quickly rolled out to other large chains.

It's too early to tell if PayPal Here will become more than a payment method for people who left their wallets at home. The company's 7 billion estimate for 2012 mobile payments doesn't include such point-of-sale transactions. PayPal charges merchants a 2.7% transaction fee, which is roughly equal to Square's 2.75% and may offer merchants an incentive to push for PayPal if it's cheaper than credit card transactions.

But as important as smartphones may become in handling payments, PayPal is aiming well beyond them, offering a method of payment on PCs as well as the ubiquitous point-of-service terminals at brick-and-mortar cash registers. Ebay is also sure to integrate PayPal deeply into its X.Commerce initiative, a commerce platform announced last fall for online as well as offline retailers.

As PayPal's strategy comes slowly into focus, it's clear the company is thinking broadly - positioning its service in as many commercial venues as possible - and designing an interface that appeals to merchants and consumers alike. Anuj Nayar, PayPal's director of communications, says the company will roll out even more changes starting this month that "marks the beginning of fundamental change in what PayPal means to customers."

Until now, for many PayPal customers, the service has simply been one of multiple ways to pay online, most often seen as an alternative to credit cards. After years of planning, the company may finally be worming its way into our wallets, becoming as commonplace as cash once was. The rest of this year should show whether PayPal can deliver on that promise.

The jailbreak tool can also be installed on iPod3,1 and 4,1 models. Assuming your iOS device is up and running with firmware 5.1.1, you can hit up the source link after the break to get your download on. Apple has announced that sales of their third-generation iOS tablet have reached three million since Friday, making this Apple's best iPad launch to date. It was also Apple's biggest launch ever, encompassing 12 countries/regions. While that's insane and awesome -- and it's impressive they could meet the demand given past constraints -- there's still a lot of the world that has yet to get in on the action; this Friday, the new iPad goes on sale in Spain, Belgium, Mexico, Italy, Norway, Sweden and another 18 countries.

In the US, this morning's announcement from AT&T previously reported that they had busted sales records of the new iPad on launch day as well. It'll be interesting to see Verizon's numbers.

How To Print From Your New iPad Using Airprint

How To Print From Your New iPad Using Airprint Image
Whether you just happen to be surfing the web, reading a news article, or viewing a document on your new iPad and you want to print out, or you're doing actual work, for work, and need a hard copy, AirPrint makes is easy to print just about anything right from your iPad -- as long as your printer is compatible.

HOW TO SEE IF YOUR PRINTER IS AIRPRINT COMPATIBLE

To be able to print from your iPad you'll need a Wi-Fi enabled printer that supports AirPrint. To see if your wireless printer is supported, you can view the following list on Apple's website -

* List of AirPrint enabled printers

Apple adds new printers to this list regularly. If your printer shows it's compatible but your iPad doesn't find it, make sure your printer is running the newest firmware version. In order to upgrade your printer, you'll need to check your manufacturer's specifications. Most of the time it's as easy as checking for an update straight from settings and letting it update.

HOW TO PRINT FROM YOUR IPAD USING AIRPRINT

Once you've got your printer configured to support AirPrint, you can print straight from your iPad.

* Navigate to the document you'd like to print.
* From the navigation menu, choose the additional options menu which looks like a box with an arrow coming out of it. It may be located in different positions based on what app you're trying to print from.
* Choose PRINT.
* Now you'll need to choose the printer you'd like to print to.
* Adjust the number of copies you'd like to print and then tap PRINT.

That's all there is to it. Your content should print directly to the printer with no computer required.

TROUBLESHOOTING AIRPRINT ISSUES

If you run into issues printing something from your iPad, try performing the following steps and see if they resolve your problems -

* Make sure your printer is updated to the latest firmware and supports AirPrint (you can refer to the list above provided by Apple or ask your manufacturer).
* Check to ensure that your printer is connected to the same network as your iPad is. Your iPad won't recognize your printer if it isn't wirelessly connected and on the same network.
* Make sure you are selecting the correct printer name. If you have more than one printer in your home by the same manufacturer it can be hard to tell which is which so check the exact model numbers.

Once you've got your new iPad and printer paired up you'll be able to wirelessly print documents without ever touching a computer. It's a great feature to utilize when you aren't in a position to hop on a computer or don't want to boot one up just to print something. I actually find myself printing from my iPad and iPhone more than I do my actual computer these days. What have your experiences been with AirPrint?

Apple Releases iOS 4 3 Software Update

Apple Releases iOS 4 3 Software Update Image
Apple released the iOS 4.3.3 software update today, iPhone 4 (GSM model), iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation), and iPod touch (3rd generation) just like they had promised. This update was released due to a bug in Apple's location tracking system which saved locations in the cache whenever iTunes was synced. The following changes have been made to iOS 4.3.3:

* Reduces the size of the cache

* No longer backs the cache up to iTunes

* Deletes the cache entirely when Location Services is turned off

iOS users can update their iOS Device to iOS 4.3.3 through iTunes. Apple also plans to encrypt the cache in their next major iOS update, which is iOS 5.0.

Apple Is Allowing Under-age Workers To Be On The Factory Floor

Apple Is Allowing Under-age Workers To Be On The Factory Floor Image
In January, the radio show This American Life had hosted an a performer called Mike Daisey to talk about his experience talking to Chinese laborers who assemble iPads, iPhones, and other Apple products. Apparently Daisey had straight-out lied to TAL fact-checkers about many encounters, according to Rob Schmitz, a writer for Marketplace who investigated his claims. Daisey had created a one-man show called "The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs" (PDF transcript) about his experiences. After being outed, he openly admitted that he's not a journalist and that he takes creative license with his work. Here's one excerpt that Daisey made up about one factory worker who had mangled his hand while on duty at Foxconn, and was trying out the iPad for the first time.
He's never actually seen one on, this thing that took his hand. I turn it on, unlock the screen, and pass it to him. He takes it. The icons flare into view, and he strokes the screen with his ruined hand, and the icons slide back and forth. And he says something to Cathy, and Cathy says, "he says it's a kind of magic."
Other parts of Daisey's commentary alleged that Apple is allowing under-age workers to be on the factory floor, which Apple has admitted to in their own audits, though they say it's much more rare than Daisey makes it out to be. While it's great to see stories from Nightline and the like uncover what working conditions are like in Chinese factories, particularly among Apple partners, it's very worrying to see reports like this get through the cracks and dramatize the situation on the pretense of being factual. Sure, things could stand to improve for folks at Foxconn, but lying about it certainly isn't going to help the cause; if anything, it discredits the efforts anyone making humanitarian efforts in the area.

This American Life has retracted the episode featuring Daisey, and issued a statement accepting responsibility for the whole mess. At least we can rest assured that this Daisey guy won't be particularly popular after this episode is done with.

Apple Is Just Going To Preview iOS

Apple Is Just Going To Preview iOS Image
Its about time the rumor mill starting churning at full speed as Apple fans all around the world are anxiously waiting for the iPhone 5 release. While we don't know when iPhone 5 is releasing, we do know that it can even be called the iPhone 4S with just minor design improvements, larger screen and that A5 dual-core processor. Previous reports have hinted at a possible 12.6 megapixel camera for the next-generation iPhone, and now alleged iPhone 5 camera parts have cropped up online to tell their own stories.

When compared to the iPhone 4, it is evident that the front facing camera on the next generation iPhone is redesigned, however no technical details have been revealed as of now.

Then there's the back camera sensor which tells us a new story. Compare it with the camera sensor on the iPhone 4 and immediately you shall notice that it is short of two elements from iPhone 4's sensor: that tiny little piece which blocks interference of camera and the flash, and the LED camera flash.

The source, Apple.pro, has got a good track record so there's little doubt in the legitimacy of these parts. The purported iPhone 5 cases that have cropped up on the internet, also hint at a relocated LED flash in the next generation iPhone. We can't say anything for sure now though, these are after all, just rumors.

No production roadmap has been finalized as yet for the next generation iPhone release as Apple is just going to preview iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion at WWDC 2011.

Keep checking back for more updates on the iPhone 5.

Apple Ii Series

FIRST WEEKEND SALES EXCEED THE IPAD 2, BUT NOT THE IPHONE 4S

iPad queue in NYC. Photo: CNET

Eight hours after Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook pronounced himself "very thrilled" with what he described as "record weekend" sales of the third-generation iPad, the company issued a press release clarifying what record the new iPad had broken.

It wasn't Apple's all-time best hardware launch. That record is still held by the iPhone 4S, which sold 4 million units in 3 days.

It took the new iPad nearly 4 days to sell 3 million units, according to the press release Apple issued at 5 p.m. Monday.

It quotes Phil Schiller, Apple's marketing chief, declaring that "The new iPad is a blockbuster."

It's hard to do comparisons, because the new iPad launched in more countries than the iPad 2 and was available for pre-order a week ahead of time.

Also, we don't actually know how many iPad 2 units sold the first weekend because Apple never issued a Monday-after press release. Supplies of the iPad were constrained at this time last year, and the sales number Apple finally released in its Q2 2011 earnings report -- 4.7 million iPads -- was considered a disappointment.

At 3 million units, it's hard to cast the new iPad as disappointment, no matter how hard some will try.

Spirit Jailbreak Download iPhone 3 1 3 iPod Touch 3 1 3 And iPad 3 2

Spirit Jailbreak Download iPhone 3 1 3 iPod Touch 3 1 3 And iPad 3 2 Image
The SPIRIT JAILBREAK DOWNLOAD is now available. The Spirit Jailbreak sofware is a userland jailbreak created by iPhone hacker comex, with the help of CHPWN. It is the first iPad jailbreak in existence, and it's pretty easy to use. All you do is just click "Jailbreak". It works with iPhone 3.1.3 firmware and iPod touch 3.1.3 firmware as well.

The Spirit Jailbreak download is really tempting to try, but I don't want to download it yet because I just got my iPad and I'm not sure if it's worth it to jailbreak iPad yet. I'll wait until all the bugs are ironed out. What about you?

Apple Announces Dividend

Apple Announces Dividend Image
Apple has announced dividend and share repurchase program expected to cost them 45 billion over the next 3 years. The conference call is about to start, so more as this develops.

Here's the press release:

Apple Announces Plans to Initiate Dividend and Share Repurchase Program

Expects to Spend 45 Billion Over Three Years

CUPERTINO, California-March 19, 2012-Apple(R) today announced plans to initiate a dividend and share repurchase program commencing later this year.

Subject to declaration by the Board of Directors, the Company plans to initiate a quarterly dividend of 2.65 per share sometime in the fourth quarter of its fiscal 2012, which begins on July 1, 2012.

Additionally, the Company's Board of Directors has authorized a 10 billion share repurchase program commencing in the Company's fiscal 2013, which begins on September 30, 2012. The repurchase program is expected to be executed over three years, with the primary objective of neutralizing the impact of dilution from future employee equity grants and employee stock purchase programs.

"We have used some of our cash to make great investments in our business through increased research and development, acquisitions, new retail store openings, strategic prepayments and capital expenditures in our supply chain, and building out our infrastructure. You'll see more of all of these in the future," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "Even with these investments, we can maintain a war chest for strategic opportunities and have plenty of cash to run our business. So we are going to initiate a dividend and share repurchase program."

"Combining dividends, share repurchases, and cash used to net-share-settle vesting RSUs, we anticipate utilizing approximately 45 billion of domestic cash in the first three years of our programs," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO. "We are extremely confident in our future and see tremendous opportunities ahead."

Apple will provide live streaming of a conference call to discuss its plans beginning at 6:00 a.m. PDT on Monday, March 19, 2012 at www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/call31912. The Company will not be providing an update on the current quarter nor will any topics be discussed other than cash. This webcast will also be available for replay for approximately two weeks thereafter.

This press release contains forward-looking statements including without limitation those regarding future business outlook and plans for dividends and share repurchases. These statements involve risks and uncertainties, and actual results may differ. Risks and uncertainties include without limitation the effect of competitive and economic factors, and the Company's reaction to those factors, on consumer and business buying decisions with respect to the Company's products; continued competitive pressures in the marketplace; the ability of the Company to deliver to the marketplace and stimulate customer demand for new programs, products, and technological innovations on a timely basis; the effect that product introductions and transitions, changes in product pricing or mix, and/or increases in component costs could have on the Company's gross margin; the inventory risk associated with the Company's need to order or commit to order product components in advance of customer orders; the continued availability on acceptable terms, or at all, of certain components and services essential to the Company's business currently obtained by the Company from sole or limited sources; the effect that the Company's dependency on manufacturing and logistics services provided by third parties may have on the quality, quantity or cost of products manufactured or services rendered; risks associated with the Company's international operations; the Company's reliance on third-party intellectual property and digital content; the potential impact of a finding that the Company has infringed on the intellectual property rights of others; the Company's dependency on the performance of distributors, carriers and other resellers of the Company's products; the effect that product and service quality problems could have on the Company's sales and operating profits; the continued service and availability of key executives and employees; war, terrorism, public health issues, natural disasters, and other circumstances that could disrupt supply, delivery, or demand of products; and unfavorable results of other legal proceedings. More information on potential factors that could affect the Company's financial results is included from time to time in the "Risk Factors" and "Management's Discussion and Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations" sections of the Company's public reports filed with the SEC, including the Company's Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended September 24, 2011 and its Form 10-Q for the fiscal quarter ended December 31, 2011. Get Email On Your iPhone The Way It Was Meant To Be With Sparrow

Get Email On Your iPhone The Way It Was Meant To Be With Sparrow Image
Many of you have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of Sparrow for iPhone, myself included, so I'm excited to report that it's here! Sparrow is a popular mail client for the Mac that focuses on providing the perfect email experience. That experience is now available on your iPhone.

Sparrow is particularly great for Gmail users because it handles labels extremely well. You are not restricted to Gmail, though. Sparrow offers full iMAP support including Gmail, Google Apps, iCloud, Yahoo, AOL, Mobile Me and custom IMAP accounts. It does "not" support POP or Exchange accounts.

Some of the favorite features of Sparrow include using Facebook to assign avatars to your friends, ability to add attachments while composing a message, a very well designed pane navigation layout, pull to refresh, alias support, and custom signatures for each email account.

Unfortunately, Sparrow does not support push. Not by choice, however; Apple made them remove it. At least for now.

I've been using Sparrow for Mac over Apple's Mail client for over a month now and have been extremely happy with it. I'm very excited about Sparrow on my iPhone and even though I've only spent a moment with it, I'm already impressed. Without push, however, it may be hard for me to make the switch from the native Mail app. We'll see.

Apple Cut The Rope For iPad Musicpuzzle Games

Apple Cut The Rope For iPad Musicpuzzle Games Image
On the surface this is a seemingly simple game that is easy to dismiss. All you do is slice dangling ropes by tracing your fingertip across the screen. On the end of said rope is a sweet that you must guide into the mouth of a frog-like creature that's been abandoned on your virtual doorstep in a cardboard box.

After playing the first ten trial levels we were hooked. You see, it's not as simple as dropping the prize into the ever-hungry target, that's often the easy part. There are three stars to collect on each level, and you get them by moving the sweet around by trapping it in bubbles, linking it to other ropes, moving the ropes on sliders and so on. You really have to think before each move. Each level is represented by a different kind of box- cardboard, fabric, foil - and the battle to amass a total of 190 stars to open the elusive final 'Gift box' was one that swallowed a whole Saturday.

We've tried Cut The Rope on the IPad and iPhone. Those blessed with little fingers will cope with the small screen of the iPhone, for those with larger digits, Apple's bigger brother will be better.

Gloriously addictive, we can see why this app has held the number one slot in the App Store. We can't wait for the release of the new levels, which keep coming out regularly.
