Apple today previewed iOS 6, which adds over 200 new features to the world's most advanced mobile operating system. New iOS 6 features include: an all-new Maps app with Apple-designed cartography, turn-by-turn navigation, and an amazing new Flyover view; new Siri features, including support for more languages, easy access to sports scores, restaurant recommendations, and movie listings; Facebook integration for Contacts and Calendar, with the ability to post directly from Notification Center, Siri, and Facebook-enabled apps like Photos, Safari, and Maps; shared Photo Streams via iCloud; and Passbook, the simplest way to get all your passes in one place. Apple also released a beta version of the new software to iOS Developer Program members. iOS 6 will be available to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users this fall as a free software update.

Victor Churchill, a European-inspired designer shop of carnivorous inspiration (Butcher) in Sydney developed a website and released an iPhone app, appropriately named "Ask the Butcher". The "Ask the Butcher App" (created by Australia's Blind Mice Studios) extends users a connoisseurs guide to buying and cooking meat.

"Ask the Butcher" answers all your questions about the perfect cut of meat, how to cook it, and what recipes to use it in. The app even has a built in timer which reminds when to turn the meat - all in an attempt to keep premium meat, well, premium.

What we find most refreshing about this brand is simply the fact that it's only a butcher shop - but fights well above its weight class. Whether Victor Churchill does in fact reap direct and measurable return on investment (ROI) from the iPhone app becomes secondary to the buzz created around their messaging and positioning. The forward positioning becomes the differentiator and Victor Churchill is seen as a market leader. Moreover, the PR and media buzz created more than offsets the cost of development.

Want an Apple iPhone but don't want to switch carriers? Now you can unlock your Iphone to use on any carrier.

Step 1

Start up Itunes and update your phone to the latest update (2.2). Download Quickpwn from http://www.quickpwn.com/. This application is what you will use to "Jailbreak" your Iphone.

Step 2

Connect your Iphone to your PC and run Quickpwn. Select your phone. Select your phone's firmware. Install Cydia or Installer. I prefer to install installer. Follow the step by step instructions.

Step 3

If you installed installer, add this repository: http://i.yellowsn0w.com/. If you installed Cydia, add this repository: http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/

Step 4

Use whatever program you installed to install yellowsn0w. Run the application and turn off your Iphone. Take out your sim card and place the SIM card from your new carrier you wish to use.

SmartSync, which has been doing good business on the iPhone app store [itunes link], has released an updated version that is a big improvement on the original app, which has become popular because it makes you sound like some sort of omnipresent god. No, I got that wrong. Let's try that again. It's like having a CRM for your friends. When someone calls you, SmartSync displays their latest Facebook statuses or photos against the call. Say they said they were tired. When they call you you say "Wow, sorry to hear you're feeling tired!" even before they've said hello. See, suddenly you're all-knowing.

The app syncs birthday reminders, status updates, profile pictures and check-ins. SmartSync also sync with contacts, even if you aren't friends on Facebook. If both people calling each other have SmartSync installed, you get their Facebook profile photo and whatever else they've recently published.

The startup is now looking to incorporate more social networks such as LinkedIn and other notifications when contacts change. As a result it's getting high rankings in the iPhone app store as a paid-for app.

Bringing social syncing to your contact books makes sense - suddenly your old contact address books looks a bit flat without this facility. Just don't say the word Plaxo

The Facebook iOS app's built-in contact syncing feature isn't that great and often can't distinguish between a name on Facebook and the contact you have in your phone. SmartSync claims it is much better at this, matching contacts using factors beyond just a person's name and achieving a higher hit rate in syncing.

Founders Ken Vinner and Shlomo Unger have angel backing for the app. Here are the guys demoing it for me at Mobile World Congress.
