Catan Vs The Settlers Which Game Will Colonize Your iPhone We

Catan Vs The Settlers Which Game Will Colonize Your iPhone We Image
We're pitting two iPhone and iPad games against one another that are all about settling a brave new world. On the one side, we have the digital adaptation of the classic board game, Catan. In the other, we have a veteran PC title that's made the leap to mobile, called The Settlers.

For some people, the word "Catan" will conjure up memories of hours spent haggling for sheep and building roads. Trust me, it's more fun than it sounds - that nostalgia is what will pull most iPhone and iPad owners to give the digital game a try. The game board is broken up into hexagonal tiles, each with their own resource type. Players build settlements at the intersections of these tiles to gather surrounding resources, and construct roads to connect their towns. Every turn, dice are rolled to determine which tiles produce resources, which the players can then trade with one another as needed. There are a variety of win criteria, none of which involve going to war and razing your opponents' cities to the ground, which is a nice change of pace. Instead, you earn victory points for having the longest road, the most (or biggest) cities, and amassing the largest army. The first one to a certain number of victory points (usually 10) wins.

The fly-in menu in Catan is very slick, and after a few games, navigating it becomes very natural.

The charm of the board game was playing with friends - wheeling and dealing in resources, cutting each other off in road construction, and planting robbers in their territory to plunder their resources. Despite the wide variety of turn-based online multiplayer titles available for iPhone, Catan only offers local hand-off multiplayer, which significantly stunts the fun factor. Catan also takes another knock for requiring you to buy "The Seafarers" expansion pack for 5 in order to access the single-player campaign mode, although it nearly doubles the number of scenarios you can play in the one-off custom games. Without the add-on, you're limited to the generic skirmish mode with AI opponents and a smaller handful of game variants. Given, the computer opponents have a wide variety of strengths and weaknesses, providing for some decent replayability, it's still not an ideal single-player experience with a level-by-level narrative. At least dealing with robots means you don't feel bad for taking a long time on turns or screwing them over in trades. I found the user interface and graphics for Catan to be pretty nice, and even when you're just playing with the AI, the fundamental gameplay retains its classic appeal.

Youll have a lot of buildings in The Settlers, and even more resources to manage.

Fans of the settling-themed games will likely be familiar with The Settlers series on PC. At its core, The Settlers is a production chain game. The line of production is sensible, but extensive. Make a woodcutter to chop wood. Make a sawmill to make boards from that wood. Use the boards to make a farm. Make a mill to turn the grain into flour. This goes on all the way through feeding miners to smelting iron to training troops to expanding your territory. Though aggressive military expansion is the inevitable outcome of all of that micromanaging, you spend the vast majority of your time making sure everyone is fed and properly supplied. The game stretches across four separate single-player campaigns, traveling through a wide variety of landscapes and pitting you against many different civilizations - both indigenous and competing colonies.

The problem with The Settlers is that the sheer complexity of the chain of production creates a very cluttered user interface on the iPhone. There are tons of sub-menus to pinpoint specific units. Terrain is graded on how quick it is to build structures, creating this jarring blur of red and green dots. Though some of the nitpickier parts of the PC game have been axed for simplicity, such as creating the network of roads to connect buildings, and upgrading building levels to increase productivity, I would say they could have cut even more while keeping the same core, appealing gameplay. For example, we could skip the coal requirement to smelt iron and gold, get rid of stone mines since there are already quarries, and reduce the number of unit types to avoid confusion. There are 33 different types of settlers that you have to manage, each with their own tool, material, and building requirements, not to mention the second- and third-level military units you can train - that's a lot to juggle. They've even introduced a lot of extra elements that I don't recognize since playing Settlers 7 on PC, like sulfur mines, eyecatcher buildings, and priests.

Is this what combat is supposed to look like?

Sure, great real-time strategy games benefit from extensive tech trees, but for an iPhone game, it feels cramped, and I imagine even on an iPad The Settlers would be hectic. The graphics are decent, but zooming in on gameplay just shows a pixelated blown-up view, rather than higher-res textures.

Picking between the two is a tough call because they both have pretty specific flaws; Catan is missing vital online multiplayer support, and Settlers has a cramped user interface. Despite having similar themes, both have fairly different game mechanics, too. Besides having a more streamlined user interface, I found the pace of Catan's gameplay more sensible for mobile; even with a fast-forward button, The Settlers is built for long-haul single-player missions. Meanwhile, you could have a rewarding turn in Catan in a split second, and quickly put it away if something else demanded your attention. I'm sure The Settlers would be less cluttered on the iPad, and if you're a hardcore fan of the franchise, I'd suggest checking it out, but for casual players looking for a fresh colonization game on iPhone, go with Catan.

1 3 iPhone Apps To Work On

1 3 iPhone Apps To Work On Image
Firmware version 1.1.3 has just been jailbroken, today on January 19 with read and right access. iPhone firmware version 1.1.3 has still not been unlocked yet. The 1.1.3 Secpack has been found. The jailbreak was done by the iPhone dev Team and Elite Team. But there have been some rumors that they're going to wait until the iPhone SDK comes out in late February to release it. This could be false, though. At this time the jailbreaking procedure is very long. It should be much easier soon. Hopefully the dev Team will release it next weekend. When new information comes out I will update. To watch the video with firmware version 1.1.3 jailbroken in action click here.

Update 1/20 5:30 PM PST: The iPhone dev Team will hold off the release of the 1.1.3 jailbreak until the SDK comes out in late February. That could be a good thing because if Apple requires us to update to a newer version in order to download apps from iTunes, we would still be able to jailbreak and we would still have the ability to download apps through iTunes. They are also working on getting the 1.1.3 iPhone apps to work on 1.1.2. Another downside is that with the 1.1.3 firmware many of the applications will not work. The applications from the Springboard do not have root access anymore which means we wouldn't be able to use Customize. The dev Team is also working on fixing Installer so it will work on 1.1.3. Many applications would have to modified to to work on 1.1.3. The 1.1.3 jailbreak does not look like it will be as great as we expected.

Update 1/22 9:45 PM PST: The iPhone dev Team and Elite Team have recently merged to develop the jailbreak for firmware version 1.1.3. It took about seven members to develop the jailbreak. This jailbreak will not require any hardware modification of any kind. The jailbreak is done by some command line work. Also all apps will go into the mobile section of the iPod's file system (/var/mobile).

Apple iPhone Tops J D Power Smartphone User Satisfaction Survey Obviously

Apple iPhone Tops J D Power Smartphone User Satisfaction Survey Obviously Image
Surprise! Everyone loves their iPhones. J.D. Power and Associates have just announced the results of their annual smartphone customer satisfaction survey, and like usual, Apple's iPhone has topped the list. On a 1,000-point scale, spanning criteria of performance, ease of operation, physical design, and features, Apple scored 839. Second place was claimed by HTC with a score of 798, while the industry average was 774. This is the seventh consecutive win for Apple in this particular survey.

ChangeWave recently published a survey which backs up the sentiment, but I don't think we really need a lot of stats to prove the point that people love their iPhones. The J.D. Power and Associates survey does a good job highlighting what's important to people, though. Battery life is the least satisfying part of a smartphone, according to their research. Software stability is also really high on the list; devices which experienced a crash at least once a week averaged a score of 691.

On that note, what's the very worst thing you could say about your iPhone? The screen size?

iPhone Apple Patent App Portends Gadgets Made Of Glass

iPhone Apple Patent App Portends Gadgets Made Of Glass Image
Thought all those shattered screens and iPhone 4 backplates would push Apple towards making mobile devices machined from aluminum like its laptops and tablets? Think again, friends, because a newly published patent application from Cupertino indicates the company is considering crafting portable computing devices out of glass. The app claims a "substantially seamless enclosure... extruded in its entirety with glass material" so that wireless signals can freely flow to and fro, along with a method for manufacturing such a device. Naturally, this is only an application, and it doesn't say exactly what kind of super-durable glass would make this a desirous design change. So, who knows if we'll ever see an all-glass exterior on an iPhone or iPod, but you can get a more in-depth peek at that potential future at the source link below. You can also get a glance at what'll be Android's new anthem should that glass-filled future come to pass.

I Buy An iPhone To Get iOS

I Buy An iPhone To Get iOS Image
Why would Apple ever prioritize over "When HAS Apple prioritized market share over profits? And how did that turn out? (Hint - cloning; almost put Apple out of business, before Jobs came back and refocused the company on wait for it profitable activities.)

I'm sure Apple is capable of producing a feature-phone that maybe looked like an iPhone, but it wouldn't "an iPhone if it didn't support all/most of the features of iOS. It would be the equivalent of the new iPod nano Looks like iOS, but isn't; removes features that people think of when they think of iPod nano. It's not clear to me why they build it other than "because we could" -- or who is buying it.

Would a smaller iPhone be neat? Sure. Would I want one? Eh, not if I lost capabilities just to get a smaller device. I buy an iPhone to get iOS, apps, GPS, FaceTime, the "real browser" experience, etc. etc. Not because it has a shiny Apple on the back.

iPhone Os Version History Access Camerwithout Unlocking iOS Devices

iPhone Os Version History Access Camerwithout Unlocking iOS Devices Image
A new feature in iOS 5.1 is the ability to access the camera without unlocking your iPhone or iPod touch (if you have a passcode set). To do this, press the home button, and to the right of the Slide to Unlock slider, you'll see a camera icon. The first times I tried, I couldn't figure out how this worked; I tapped the icon, but the screen just slid up a bit, then bounced back down. You need to slide the screen up, while dragging the camera icon, to access the camera.

Once you've done this, you can take pictures as you wish. In the bottom-left corner of the window is a small gallery icon, which lets you see your photos from your current session (you can't access other photos.)

You can go back to the lock screen by swiping down from the top of the screen, or proceed to the passcode entry screen by pressing the home button.

Note: this works with the iPhone and iPod touch, but not the iPad 2.

Apple Have Had Similar Policies For Years

Apple Have Had Similar Policies For Years Image
BlackBerry PlayBook owners who have jailbroken the device, take note: Research In Motion says you've voided your warranty by doing so.

In a post to RIM's official blog, Adrian Stone, director of the company's BlackBerry Security Incident Response Team (BBSIRT), explains -- in painstaking detail -- RIM's position on "jailbreaking," a procedure some tech-savvy consumers use to extend the functionality of devices whose operating systems are tightly controlled by their manufacturers. Its headline: Don't do it.

And if you do do it? Well, then, you're on your own if things go south for you.

"RIM recommends against installing any jailbreaking tool," Stone wrote. "Customers who use a jailbreaking tool on BlackBerry products void the manufacturer warranty and also increase the long-term risk of negatively impacting the stability and user experience of their BlackBerry products."

Not a surprising position for RIM to take. Rivals like Apple have had similar policies for years. But then, Apple needed one almost immediately after launching the iPhone in 2007. Evidently, RIM hasn't until now, when the homebrew community has taken to meddling with the PlayBook via jailbreak tools like Dingleberry. Which is a good sign, I suppose, given the device's lackluster sales.

Atandt Vs Verizon Which 4g Lte New iPad Should You Get

Atandt Vs Verizon Which 4g Lte New iPad Should You Get Image
Once you've decided to get a new iPad, picked out your color, and settled on your storage capacity, if you're going with the 4G LTE model of the new iPad in the US, the question becomes -- AT&T or Verizon, which carrier should you choose? For most of us, the decision will come down to two factors - coverage, pricing, and tethering.

Here's how it breaks down.

PRICING PLANS

Here's the pricing comparison chart that Apple displays on the ordering page for the new iPad. All plans are commitment free and paid month-to-month -- you can cancel at anytime.

So with regards to cost, you need to ask yourself how much data you plan on using. Realistically, if you have Wifi at home, work and school (if you're a student), you can probably get by just fine with AT&T's 250MB per month plan and save 5. On the other hand, for only 5 more, you can jump up to a full GB of data with Verizon.

The most popular plans will be the 30 plans, and at that price, AT&T gives you an extra gigabyte -- that's 50% more than Verizon's 2 GB. The 50 plans are identical on Verizon and AT&T.

In reality, these plans are fairly similar and pricing shouldn't be the sole-determining factor. It's more important that your carrier offers the data you want in the area you live your life.

LTE AVAILABILITY

In addition to price, you must also consider where each carrier offers coverage and if you're within that area. Here's a side by side comparison of Verizon's and AT&T's coverage maps (left is Verizon, right is AT&T).

Clearly, Verizon has much more LTE availability (green dots vs orange dots.) If you live in an area where Verizon offers LTE and AT&T does not, your best bet is to probably go with Verizon, providing that their network is pretty solid in that area. If you're not sure, ask your family, friends, and coworkers who have LTE phones on Verizon's network.

If LTE is not available to you on either network, the next thing to look at is 3G coverage. If you live somewhere that only gets EDGE on AT&T (light blue on AT&T's map), Verizon is the way to go.

Most of you, however, will be in one of these last two categories: an LTE available area on both Verizon and AT&T, or, in a 3G, but not LTE available area on both Verizon and AT&T. For those of you in this category, I'm inclined to recommend AT&T, provided that the 3G network is stable in your area. Again, ask your friends, family, and coworkers for their experience.

Why AT&T, you ask? Because AT&T's HSPA and HSPA+ 3G networks are faster than Verizon's CDMA 3G network. It's all about the speed.

You can get a closer look at AT&T's coverage map here and Verizon's map here.

TETHERING

If you want to have the ability to tether your iPad's network connection to your computer, then Verizon in your only choice. Verizon includes tethering in their data plans and does not come at an additional cost.

As of right now, AT&T does not offer this functionality.

MAKING THE CHOICE

So which one are you going to choose? Personally, since AT&T's LTE network is not available in my area, but Verizon's is, it was a no-brainer for me to choose Verizon (even though my iPhone is with AT&T). What about you?

It Is Necessary To Completely Disassemble The iPhone

It Is Necessary To Completely Disassemble The iPhone Image

By markfreelance

One of the most complex repairs on an iPhone is a screen replacement repair, before you attempt this repair be sure to have sufficient time to complete the task, and have a clear working space for your iPhone and the replacement screen to sit in while working on them.

1. For a replacement screen repair it is necessary to completely disassemble the iPhone, therefore I would suggest that prior to commencing the repair get a few small pieces of paper in order to label your parts, and I particular the origin of the screws. Label them as follows; Metal Back Screws, aluminum back case, and motherboard - lay them out on the workspace in this order with a small space between them for the other iPhone components and replacement screen to lie in.

The tools and equipment required for this repair are; a case opener, a small Phillips screwdriver, a paperclip to eject the SIM tray and the iPhone replacement screen, once you have these to hand and the paper labels lined up. Be sure to have clean hands before starting the repair.

2. Firstly remove the SIM tray - do this by inserting the paper clip in the hole on the topside of the iPhone next to the power button, when the clip is inserted, the SIM tray should eject. Next, use the case opener to remove the plastic back of the iPhone. Lay these two components next to the paper labels, after you have fitted the replacement screen into your iPhone you will need to reverse the order of these instructions to reassemble the iPhone. For this reason, I would suggest placing them furthest from you next to the aluminum paper label.

The next step is to remove the two small screws on either side of the back securing the metal casing, and another screw located top, middle of where you removed the plastic back - placing these on the paper label. Once you have completed this, take the case opener again and carefully run it along both sides of the iPhone to loosen the back away from the frame - you will notice the metal back is secured by a wire ribbon, carefully detach this from the main section of the iPhone, not the metal back end.

3. The next step in the screen replacement repair needs caution - it is required to remove the iPhone antenna cable, secured by glue in three positions, carefully pry it loose of the glue spots. After this, you will need to remove 10 screws from around the sides of the iPhone, and place them on the paper label 'Outside Case' - after this remove the 3 screws securing the motherboard. You need to remove the motherboard at the same time as the battery as they are soldered together, once you have done this you can carefully detach the remaining iPhone frame.

The next step is to remove the LCD screen in order to fit the replacement screen - this is possibly the most difficult part of the repair and needs to be done with extreme caution. Loosen the 3 clips on the sides of the screen and slowly begin removing the LCD, you will see some wires are intertwined into the Iphone - carefully guide them through the frame and, they will slide right through.

4. Once you have completed this, take the iPhone screen replacement and insert it into the phone, carefully trace your steps to ensure that no errors are made when assembling the iPhone back to its original state.

This iPhone screen replacement guide was provided to you courtesy of iPhone Parts Pro - the online store for all your iPhone accessories, parts and spares to enable the fixing of your iPhone at home.

Building Apple Stores

Building Apple Stores Image
A recent study by Flurry Analytics shows that China the fastest-growing market for iOS and Android app activity; between Q1 2011 and Q1 2012, app sessions have increased 1126%. Yowza. On top of that, Flurry has calculated that new activations of iOS and Android devices in China has now surpassed the U.S. They project that China will activated 24% of all Android and iOS, which is a stark contrast to 8% at the same time last year, and a smidgen ahead of the 21% activation rate in America. While the U.S. still boasts the most app activity, its lead is shrinking; last year, America accounted for 56% of iOS and Android app sessions, but now account for only 46%. Collectively, China, UK, South Korea, France, Australia, Canada, Japan, Germany and Spain now account for 30% of app activity, and the rest of the world takes up 24%.

Apple has called China an "extremely important" market in their quarterly conference calls for a while now, placing it ahead of Brazil and Russia as an area of focus. Tim Cook has said the demand for Apple products in China is "staggering" and "off the charts". Apple has also been investing heavily in building Apple Stores in China and getting devices into the country and onto the market.

While this bodes well for the progress of iPhone and iPad in China, I would be really curious to see the breakdown between Android and iOS for these figures. In an absolute sense, the U.S. still spends the most time with apps, but I'm not sure that will be the case in a year's time, especially as cost-conscious Android handsets continue to proliferate.

Apple App Store

Apple App Store Image

BUDWEISER, owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, the worlds largest brewing conglomerate, ran mobile ads for its Bud Light Lime brand on the Weather Channel's mobile site and within its iPhone application to promote its mobile initiatives.

Ads included videos and click-to-Bud Light WAP sites and the Apple App Store. The iPhone application banner ads were expandable ad units, so a user can touch the ad to expand it to take up a majority of the screen on the device, featuring a video that played within the ad unit that conveyed being on the beach and having a Bud.

"The idea was to promote Bud Light during the key summer months, with The Weather Channel iPhone application providing an exclusive opportunity and audience reach," said the Vice President of mobile for The Weather Channel Interactive, Atlanta. "Several creative executions rotated with important seasonal messages about Bud Light Lime and Bud Light's Port Paradise promotion".

The strategy behind The Weather Channel ad-supported app for iPhone was to make the top weather app even more useful while still remaining free for consumers. It's clear that Mobile customers respond to superior products and services with more than 6.5 million downloads. The Weather Channel application is now the top weather application in the Apple App Store, and its rich media expandable 320x40/300 ad unit offers a breakthrough creative execution.

Many of the banners in Bud Light Lime's campaign drove consumers to the company's Bud Light Lime Summer Hotspots iPhone Application. The application helps consumers locate hot spots in their area where they can cool off with a Bud Light Lime during the summer. Also, consumers were driven to http://www.budlightlime.com/m/budlime.

Ads within the iPhone application also promoted Bud Light's Paradise sweepstakes. Consumers were asked to text the keyword CRUISE to short code 23377 (BEERS) for a chance to win a cruise.

Bud Light's adult consumers are heavy users of the mobile Web and 92 percent of TWC's iPhone application users are 21 years of age or older. The app is a great benefit to users and advertisers alike - opening the doors for expandable ads, click to video, GPS and more - all without sacrificing user experience.
